My apologies for taking so long to return. I had a busy week....

I tired the 1M pot, but didn't notice much difference. So I took the necessary steps to replace the pickups. I was told that original Epiphone pickups (MIK) are fairly muddy, so I replaced it with Washburn 421 and 423 which I had in my parts collection. The result was better than I had imagined. Fortunately, I managed to improve the tone without spending :-)

@rkk108 Thanks I seems I did interpret the formula wrongly. Increasing the resistor will increase the top end.

Thank you very much for your reply and feedback!I carefully read the text, but I never studied electronics, so I couldn't make much of it. It does make reference to the capacitor, which I heard is a big part of the tone when turning down the knob.

Regarding the pot value, this is what I got from Chat GPT:

Yes, a 1 meg (megohm) potentiometer (pot) will result in more treble and a brighter sound compared to a 500k or 250k pot. A higher resistance value like 1M allows more high frequencies to pass through and creates a more pronounced resonant peak, leading to a brighter tone with more dynamics. Conversely, using a lower-value pot, like a 250k, can make the sound darker and warmer.

My neck humbucker is so muddy and it could do with more treble. Maybe the pickup doesn't provide sufficient treble by default and therefore I cannot add something that's not there. It's hard to tell...

I already purchased a 1M pot and will give it a try.

@rkk108 No I haven’t tried that. Only stuck with wiring diagrams from books. Here is the formula for calculating how it would affect the frequency cut off or roll off point. Try putting in the different resistor values to see what it would do. 13019 Fc is the cuts off, meaning any signal above this is blocked. Also a link to a tutorial. The relevant part is low pass filters.

May I ask, have you every tried replacing a 500K pot for 1M? I assume one could filter less frequencies with a 1M pot and, it necessary, adjust the pot to optimum treble sound. Is this something worth thinking about?

@rkk108 That would be useful. Guitar electronics can be confusing with so many different configurations. I’ve studied basic electronics but it doesn’t help much with guitar stuff.
Having a multimeter does help.

Hi Mark,

I am struggling to understand the principles of electronics. I have read several posts in the NET, but it all remains enigmatic to me. I have tried to build a headless guitar before joining your courses and wanted to install a single coil and humbucker, but with only one volume and one tone pot. The result was quite unsatisfactory.

Maybe a course on the basics of guitar electronics would be interesting...

I would love to learn to build some PRS type stuff. I have a lovely little custom se 24 that my wife bought me about 8 years ago but after taking early retirement I am not rolling in it. I would dearly love to build a hollow body PRS type.

BTW. Brand new here. Been playing (very badly) for many years and been doing small upgrades and repairs for most of that time and thought about all the hideously built mass produced stuff I have seen and thought that, with some training and all the time in the world on my hands now, I can build something at least usable.
pleased to be here. Been through a few of the old videos on YouTube and been pleasantly surprised by how straightforward it is presented.

Drop tops and arch tops would be awesome
