It reminds me of my own struggles when I attempted to wire a custom pickguard on my guitar. I had a similar experience where everything looked good on paper, but reality threw me some curveballs. The troubleshooting steps you shared are invaluable; I wish I had found this thread before diving into that project! Your willingness to share both the successes and challenges truly reflects what makes this community special—supporting each other through the ups and downs of guitar making. Keep it up!

Ultimately, on the bass pickup, the white wire is the +, the cloth wire with the core is the -, and on the treble pickup, the black wire is the +, and the cloth wire with the core is the -. Conclusion: Connection 3 on the switch was fault: the wires connecting the two coils combined should be swapped to: the red wire + (screw coil) and cloth wire - (slug coil). My mistake was that I first connected the + to the +, the black wire + (slug coil) to the red wire + (screw coil).

In a single coil the pickups would be counter wound and counter polarity for hum bucking purposes. A backwards wiring (which would make it counter pole but not counter wound) would sound very thin. Humbuckers may act differently depending on how they're hooked up (2 wire, 4 wire, splitting coils, etc). I don't see where you attached what you've tried so far, maybe that'll help
