A good friend of mine and fellow guitar maker has a Go Fund Me campaign for funds for vital repairs and improvements of his workshop. He is a non-profit organisation near Falkirk, Scotland and is a constant help to people in his community. He makes some wonderful guitars and makes people who can’t normally afford the guitar they want, very happy. He makes them extremely affordable and any small profit he does make, goes straight back into improving his tools and workshop. He does need a bit more help though so if any of you could spare a small contribution, he and I would be extremely grateful.

I really look forward to returning to this forum with some new guitar builds this year.

Thanks very much.
Boo 🤘😜🤘

Hi everyone,

I started what I thought was a simple bit of maintenance on a Washburn EA16TS for a friend. The guitar has been stored in a case in the loft for a number of years and the brief was to check out the electrics, give everything a clean, do a setup and get it back in a playable state.

First problem, the guitar seems to be receiving a signal from the pickup, the tuner works and is pretty accurate measured against a clip on tuner. The output through the jack socket is mostly noise and I haven’t got a suitable XLR out connector to test that output. I’ve had the control/preamp and the output/battery box units out and sprayed contact cleaner on the PCBs and connectors and still mostly noise.

The second problem is that on removing the strings, the end of the E6 string appears to have permanently attached itself to the bridge pin!! I can pull the pin out about 4mm but it wants to pull the string and ball end out with it, jamming everything. The string won’t push back in to the body cavity and I can’t get a grip on the ball end inside the body to pull it free. I’ve never seen this happen before, usually a wiggle of the pin or the string frees everything. I don’t want to use the age old adage of brute force and ignorance in case I cause irreparable damage!😂😂

I’d really appreciate any advice anyone cares to offer on how best to deal with these problems🤔🤔😃

Thanks,

Brian😃🎸🤔

I am having trouble understanding a wiring diagram due to conflicting information I am getting from ChatGPT. all the info is in the zip file. I am going to use new humbuckers 58/15 LT TCI (2025) from PRS (no information inside the box), a Schaller 5-position megaswitch, and a volume/tone pot. In the PDF 'prs wire diagram info pickups' I tried to create the circuit. Can someone tell me if this is right or wrong?

@somethingnicer or anyone else maybe you can help me. a lot of information in the zip file.

Thanks in advance, Benjamin

Ps. ask me if you need more info.

So I have decided to go magnets and wooden cavity cover on my first build.

I went with 6mm x 1mm magnets which seems ok but I think I would go stronger/thicker in the future.

I also laminated 2 bits of sapele Veneer together 1.5mm (3mm thickness overall) which seemed ok but it went bent/curved in a couple of days so this needs to be thicker too grrr!

Has anyone used magnets and a 1 piece or laminated veneer for the cavity cover? If so what is your go to thickness and what size of magnets have you got good results from?

It’s my first build so lots of learning lol. Lived oiling her up the other day!

Hello all, I'm I'm working on a maple neck with a maple fretboard (bolt on). I'm at the point where I'm struggling on what order to do things, My fret slots are the right depth and my side dots are in. My plan is to use Osmo oil to finish on both the neck and fretboard.

So my thought was should I finish sand the entire neck so I can put the oil on the whole thing all at once? Can I just oil the fretboard and then oil the back of the neck later? Probably not huh?

If I oil the fretboard before putting the frets in, won't the oil clog the slots? Or will I have to re-clear the slots after oiling?

Or would it be better to just put the frets in now, and oil over them and clean off the oil when crowning?

On one level just another bandsman and on another a build with so many first time tasks. Safe to say I learned a lot.

The design considerations when chambering, carve top styling, the joy/pain of carving a fancy maple top, double staining, faux binding. My very first attempt an a nitro finish. With all the sanding and buffing I should have forearms like Popeye (probably showing my age with that reference.). In fact I thought I had sanded the life out of this project and in the final analysis I could have and should have gone further. Everything shows up - even when it could barely seen. So, it’s not perfect but only I can see where the bodies are buried! I also achieved my best ever fret job! Plays like a dream.

So my best build so far and i am giving it away….., I had a lot of fun doing it and want to express my thanks to Mark for his supportin dealing with all my questions, queries and occasional moments of stress throughout the process. I will probably have to do another just because i can.

Longer and narrower so regular covers don't fit let alone frames.
