I have just built my second guitar up in sunny Ayrshire with Mark and Carol.

I built my first in September 2017 and was back in the workshop for 7 days at the start of June this year - both builds were totally brilliant!

I hope to go back to the workshop for another build, probably in 2021 but now want to try a simple build in my garage.  Currently thinking of trying a Les Paul Junior single cutaway, buying body and neck blank, fretboard and truss rod from the online store.

Won’t make a start for a couple of months as I need to get the workshop set up.

Will post progress if I make any 😉

Bill

Hi Bill, that's the way I started! Life has never been the same since...............

Good luck with your build and do yourself a favour: Follow Mark's online course! Step-by-step instructions on how to build a relatively simple set-neck guitar. In the course Mark shares the Bailey Bandsman design, which can be easily converted to LP Junior SC.

Measure once, cut straight away and maybe you're lucky......

I have been offered a small bandsaw - only 80mm cut depth - I do have access to one with 150mm cut depth at work so the little one would get me started making patterns and will with a bit of care do most of the bandsawing apart from headstock and cutting the side profile of the neck......

Looking foward to making a start in September........

A bandsaw with 80mm Depth of cut is great for a starter - I made my first 60 guitars with a similar one as seen here:

Looking foward to making a start in September........

Looking forward to hearing about it! Please keep us posted 🙂

If I follow the BYOG online course but use a Les Paul Junior single cut body shape with a single pickup how do I cope with ‘hiding’ the neck joint as there wouldn’t be a neck pickup - could do a scratch plate - any other ideas?

@frocesterbill

It's a great question! I think the only way would be to make it thru neck...or bolt on....or just leave it visible.

Workshop is just about ready - bandsaw, oscillating spindle sander, pillar drill, routers and a shop vac - all of the tools and materials on the list in the tools PDF - jigs and most of the patterns made - goggles and two masks, one for dust and one for vapours to keep Carol happy - I‘ve practised counting fingers.............
