this is a bit embarrasing to admit but I realised the truss rod wasn't set right, no wonder the action was so high, it was set with a huge amount of backbow, so now it's setup up and neck almost straight the action is down to 1.5mm at the low E, I don't have to lower the bridge anymore, it feels much better to play now, lesson learnt.

finally worked out what I did wrong today, when I calculated the break angle in the body, I was off by 2.5mm, now it all makes sense, I didn't include the thickness of the base plate, hopefully on the next build I'll get that part right.

@sogoslotvvip hi, not sure what you mean by wood polish? It is french polished, it probably doesn't come out too well in the photos though because it was a dull/cloudy day when taken.

i think applying wood polish in darker parts of the guitar might be a nice detail 🤔

Thats all looking good. If you're not happy with the string height, why not recess the bridge by the thickness of the plate to make it flush with the body, that would give you bit of room for adjustment.

I re-carved the top, got rid of the volute and thinned out the neck then re-finished it, feels even better now to play. Just need to add on strap buttons, and then it's officially finished, the one thing I couldn't work out though was I must have gotten the angle slighly off because at the lowest bridge setting it's still a bit too high by about 1mm, lesson learnt though and hopefully on guitar no2 it'll be better.
