@jamesbisset On another build, I’d be tempted to try the two internal layers at 30°-45° and 315°-330°. But I haven’t really thought through the implications of that. I’ve seen ply laminated dinghy hulls built like that with alternate diagonal strips,… Read more»

@jamesbisset Sure enough, the next morning revealed that the face veneer (1.5mm thick) had opened up along the glue line. I had another thought this morning, are the joints in the layers all on the centre line, might it help… Read more»

@jamesbisset So, the back went into the vacuum press, this time glued with a slow cure urea resin, and you heard me say on the video there were a couple of creaks. Sure enough, the next morning revealed that the… Read more»

@jamesbisset Pleased you are getting somewhere at last, however you still need a foolproof method that works for teaching beginners.Ive thought about this since we chatted last week. I would be inclined to start from the inside veneer, build up… Read more»

So, just for you, here’s some video of a vacuum pump.

@jamesbisset Thinking out loud here: In 3D modelling, you usually build the shape and then wrap it in a texture – often a high res tiled photo of wood or bricks or whatever. You could probably use a 3D modelling… Read more»

@jamesbisset I thought one of the comments was about wrinkling cased by the bag pressing, so I thought a solid outer mold would stop this. I haven’t read any books on this it was just an idea I had. Hand… Read more»

@jamesbisset Ive been following your build with interest and trying to get my aging brain cells around the problem. Once you have a concave mold made for the front and back would it be possible to make a convex one… Read more»

@jamesbisset Maybe you’ve just been unlucky with that veneer James. You’ll probably be okay with the next one although given that you don’t have unlimited wood it’s always worrying to try the next one without trying to find a solution… Read more»

Is it the speed with which the wood is being forced that causes the stress?
I really do think that you might be onto something there and worth a try.

- And this time the lamination crumpled up like a hankie.
You’re certainly having challenges there. Do you think that wetting it is the problem there. I think I remember Darren using non water based glues, maybe for that reason.

Hi James, Just wondering if it would be better not to tape the veneer to the mould and just allow it to slide into the hollow. 🤷🏻♂️
