I’ll snap a few photos of my benches when I move into my new shop in a couple of weeks as all my stuff is in storage. I built my first one around 15 years ago from some plans that I found online. The bench is a tad complicated but nothing outrageous, I didn’t know any better. I wanted something solid and that’s what I got!

@mattbeels That sounds solid man, can’t wait to see it.

@tv101 beautiful cabinet build. Very clean and you have a really nice workspace. @Boo must be nice to have an extra indoor space for specialty work. Nice use of space with your floating shelves/benches. Smart call. @Robin pretty amazing what you converted as your personal workshop. Nicely done and very utilitarian. @rocknroller912 the black and decker fold up rocks! I got one and will go with me on my grave. Use it all the time. As a vise, a shooting board base, even as a router table with a diy router base. Workhorse of a bench. 2 of those and you are ready for Rock n Roll. @Russ really nothing to it but to do it. Meanwhile my woodworking shed which I built from the ground up is a mess. Need to re organize. Found my fret hammer. Wife used it to nail a picture frame in the house.

My workbench has a melamine top. Kinda nice to pencil in plans. Once done, I simply wash it off or light sand it. Hence, a new journey begins. It detaches to use the other side and can be replaced. I made a video of it making it using pocket holes and mortise and tenons. Will post when I find it. Quite easy inexpensive and sturdy.

Ahh, that makes sense. I noticed that your plans were always on the bench and kind of wondered about that. Seems like a pretty cool idea actually...

Practice on scrap...

I write/draw on my MDF top with pencil - rub it with 80 grit to remove - bit of paper seem to hide/blow off onto the floor/get tea spilt on them.

Measure once........ Measure again......... Sod it - make tea!

Under normal circumstances I live in a caravan for about 8 months of the year. I love working outdoors, you can do a lot with a folding up workbench or two.

I can understand the need for something more solid. Folding benches are not very solid but I don't have any space left in my garage. I do have a 5ft metal bench with plywood top that has my  wood turning lathe bolted on and a small engineers metal work lathe. I also have a choice of vices that I can bolt on and a T board which is held in the vice and gives a better height for planing violin ribs and violin bows. I still use the folding bench with an old bit of kitchen work top for planing and sanding guitar wood. I'm trying to think of a way to adapt my wood lathe into a drum sander as it has all the electrics and only needs a height adjustment feature.

Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.

I love working outside in the summer as well, not sure if my neighbours are as keen. I always make sure I'm upwind when routing or sanding.

@clinton

Ive got two folding benches as well, after years of use one is due for a refurb so I have plywood for a new top and paint cans at the ready waiting for the weather to go a few degrees above freezing.

@rocknroller912

Just play some loud music to cover all the routing/sanding noise, and everything will be fine with the neighbours

👍

Yes, it's great in the summer, my neighbours won't be disturbed just now, it's not safe to step out the back door.

One of those icicles crashed down onto our doorstep this afternoon. Are you sure you want to move to Scotland, it's not been above freezing all day today and there's about 8" of snow where I am.

It’s always warm & sunny in Blackpool, @boo.

Thats why people can walk the streets all-but naked.

(Or, is that “all butt naked”??)

@tv101

My neighbour likes my music which is unusual as not many people like Irish fiddle playing, but she did used to run a pub in Yorkshire so probably heard all types. Most of them are out at work through the day usually and I've only been discovered thanks to lockdown. I think it's more lowering the tone of the area rather than noise as I don't use many power tools.

@robin

Thats a bit severe, looks like a hard hat area. I'm lucky my area SW is one of the few that hasn't had any real snow the last few days. Still very cold though but at least it's dry. I was cleaning my motorbike on the drive yesterday and the water was freezing on the ground while I was still working.
