Does anyone here still *buy* guitars, or do you all just make anything that you want o need?
I admit, my eye gets taken sometimes by something shiny that I spot on a website (or on a stand on a workbench 😉 ), but then I remember the pile of guitars that I've already got and realise that I certainly don't need another one.
And a bought one would take the space needed for another made one - and rob me of the enjoyment and satisfaction (and inevitable frustrations!) of the build process!
The last guitars I've bought are both acoustics. But if I take the plunge and start on the acoustic making course, I'll not need to buy another of those either ...
Anyone else still *buying* guitars, and if so ... why?

I haven't bought a guitar for around 15 years now Tony but if I had money and space I'd love to be making them and buying them. I still would love to have a Fender Jaguar and Mustang. I'm not even a good enough guitarist to justify owning them but I want them just because I'm quite shallow that way.
Cheers,
Russ

I've asked myself this question recently, and the answer is.. "I don't know, maybe, depends".
As of today, I haven't built anything from scratch yet. so there are guitars out there I'm interested in. Nothing expensive mind you. I'm looking at the budget end of the scale - things I can chop and change and experiment with.
I have a small collection of lawsuit period Antorias. If any more of those show up on my radar then it's a yes.
If I think about it I'd probably want to concentrate on building something I can't buy.
Ask me again in a couple of years. Hopefuly I'll have a few builds under my belt by then, although I suspect my answer will be "I don't know, maybe, depends".

That's easy to say @Russ - but then how good do you have to be to *justify* having a particular guitar? I've found that a new guitar, or a different guitar, encourages me to play more, or something different. Just the different feel/sound/etc.
And we all get tempted in by ads for the latest new shiny ... it's the way we (well, to be fair, most of us) have allowed ourselves to live!

Ahhh - I'd exclude something like that @Peter-johnson! I have a small collection of another Japanese brand from a similar vintage. For years I bought just about every one that I came across (there aren't many around). They rarely get played - they're not very accessible - and I think of them as a collection rather than as playing guitars.

@tv101 Very true Tony. I was brainwashed by Fender from a very young and impressionable age. I would have one of every model they've ever made........ I'd probably even buy up all the Music Man guitars by Leo as well..........how shallow can you get? 😋

@Russ - I did own a Fender, once. I had a Jazzmaster for about 3 days - took it as a part-trade for something I wanted to sell, and then sold it on really quickly afterwards! Made a few Tele types, but never had a really one!
Actually, I had a Strat for a while too, but that was years ago.

@tv101 I think the last one I bought was in about 2015 because I’ve always wanted one from being a kid. This is my Ibanez JEM 77P in Black and Blue floral. Paid about £1,000 band new for it. I’m thinking of making one at some point, just because I know I can if I put my mind to it.

Before that I bought this American Fender Strat Deluxe 2013 model, I paid about £1,350 brand new in 2013. It’s got some fancy electronics. I bought it because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, it’s pretty cool.

@tv101 All of mine are working guitars and all get played. All except one were bought second hand and some were pretty beat up. That's OK though, they've earned those scars. I've no qualms against customizing them if I need to - usually just a pickup swap. One is a Strat that came to me as just a body and neck - no hardware or electronics at all. It's going to get sprayed a solid colour, as it's in a very unattractive mismatched natural atm. I can't decide on a colour though!
The only one I bought new is a Flying V, based on the '57 korina model. It's been my number one guitar, on and off, for the past 42 years or so.

@Boo - Impressed that you can remember the specific year! I'm either too old with failing memory, or I (used to) buy too many guitars.

OK. Even more impressed now - 2013!
Before that I bought this Ibanez PGM 301 in about 2008
Do keep all this written down somewhere?

@tv101 No, I attribute certain dates to certain events in my life. I am dyslexic so my brain works differently. I did an honours degree as a mature student and graduated in 2013 so I bought myself the Fender Strat as a gift to myself. The Ibanez JEM I bought when I was on holiday in Northumberland in 2015 and I was rushed into hospital to have my appendix removed as it was about to explode; holiday ruined but got a cool guitar. 🤣
