I'm having second thoughts on the recap & carve it approach. Takes an hour or two to assemble a guitar, and maybe 10mins to strip it all back - and only that long because I desoldered everything...

That's a clever little carve - not seen that before @nsj. My mad plan, as far as it's got, is to use my old-favourite surfacing bit to take the top off (by turning it into sawdust), and a few mm off...

@tv101 here's a free les paul template, very easy to print off. Just select the body then you can check it against yours for size. I think the carve I did on this one is only 5 or 6mm, nothing dr...

Nice idea, and it’d certainly be simpler than what I have in mind. But the current cap is quite thin (6mm ish), so not a lot of thickness for carving, and I’d have to sand it back quite a bit to get...

@koendb I always make the radius before I cut the fret slots as I find using a plane can chip at the slots.

@koendb I mean for the inital flattening, getting the board nice, level and straight. I've never tried planing the radius in yet but do fancy trying it, need to get some radius gauges first.

@koendb I must admit, with the new long beam I bought it's a lot quicker and I get really nice results, I think ideally I would plane first then use the beam. Best of both.

@tv101 all the bits were in bags in a box but at some point I'd taken the trem out to check alignment with the new neck and that's when it must've fallen out. I pulled the pickups incase it was stuck ...
