RE: Build #4

I have the neck for this one almost ready to glue in but I’m still a few steps from that point. I’m carving the back of it and shewee, 80F/26.6c and a whopping 84% humidity. And I’m not done with the ...

Build #4

Yeah im not done with #3 yet and I’ve already started on another. 🤣🤣🤣 I love this though. So build #4 was inspired by 3 Gibson guitars. The Les Paul, the SG (I thought it funny...

RE: Preserving the nut line when cutting headstock angle

@nsj I found I needed to do this and was grateful of the length of the neck blank. I guess if you're making your own nut you can adapt the depth of the nut, within reason, too.

RE: Preserving the nut line when cutting headstock angle

I tend to cut my angle then plane it to the line before adding the fretboard or chopping the end off the neck. That way I can move the fretboard back if needed. I'd imagine it might be you safest opti...

Hi Kalimar, You’re right, you just have to watch carefully, measure the amount of material that needs to be removed and adjust the depth of cut accordingly and in small increments. I stopped before th...

Preserving the nut line when cutting headstock angle

Hi friends, I routed my first headstock angle this week. It went well however I came dangerously close to losing the nut line. Does anyone have advice on the best way to preserve that nut line (other...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh I solved that issue with some 10mm acrylic sheets off ebay, now I can hold my router very flat while routing. Did it to both my palm routers. Attachment : 20221020_173542.jpg Atta...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh I always do that kind of (tempate) routing on the routing table, if possible. For me it is far too easy to wobble with a handheld router and tilt it a bit. On the other hand, the router table ...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@nsj I wonder whether that’s it. I mean, on the one hand, I’m paranoid about the possibility of the router tipping and leaving those tell-tale grooves in the side of the neck, so I do try to keep the ...

RE: New black limba build

@rathius they're so cheap now for a home kit, you can start off small and expand it as you go too. Bigger area, more powerful laser, air assist etc. This one set me back £320 but if I was happy to wai...

@rathius It might do the trick, I tend to start with thinned down oil based polyurethane which adds a tint, then shellac sanding sealer and finally regular 1k matt clear, car stuff. Looks like an oil ...

RE: Build #3 (another original design)

Don't forget that the necks usually are a bit thicker at the heel end and thinner at first fret. So maybe shim up the headstock end a millimeter or two? If I undertand your setup correctly, that is.

@steveh maybe you're just pushing to hard against the neck? I've never had the problem myself so not a 100% sure what's happened.

@nsj well, I wondered about the bearing, but it spins freely by hand, and I used it afterwards on the other side of the neck without problem. The neck is samba, so it is relatively soft, but I’ve used...

@steveh are you sure the bearing isn't a bit knackered? Also what wood are you using? Bearing whouldn't be leaving any marks like that unless it's really soft wood.

One thing to keep in mind concerning your cream binding. If you’re going to spray clear on it, the clear could make it darker and closer to the pickup rings. It does depend on the clear too. Some dry ...
