RE: HELP! soundboard cracked!

@koendb I haven’t made anything new for a few years and have focussed on repairs so I’m having a practice soundboard build with a £5 piece that I bought many years ago. Glad cause it’s getting all the...

RE: My first steps in building an acoustic guitar

@koendb My Dremel router base is the same as yours and I got it from a reputable firm, but the circle attachment, which is a rectangular plate, was unavailable so I got one on Amazon which I think is ...

RE: My first steps in building an acoustic guitar

@koendb Looks like a neat job. I found the Dremel difficult to use as I’ve always cut inlays by hand in the past but have had to convert to power tools due to hand problems. I’m still not loving it. S...

RE: HELP! soundboard cracked!

@koendb It looks like the cracks are where the wood changes from heart to sap wood, unless it’s glue stain giving a darker colour. Titebond is stronger than wood so you won’t be making it weaker. Maki...

RE: HELP! soundboard cracked!

@koendb If there is a crack on the opposite side same place then I guess it’s a fault in the wood due to drying and outside your control, but you are working with it so that’s good.

Answer to: Pickup positions

@jamesbisset Very interesting question James. I wonder if the bridge position on factory guitars is related to the nodal point on strings ie the stationery point which doesn’t move when a string is pl...

RE: HELP! soundboard cracked!

@koendb Top job invisible mending. A lot of the skill is learning how to fix mistakes as they happen, so it must have given you a big confidence boost.

RE: HELP! soundboard cracked!

@koendb Looks like you have it fixed ok. An alternative to cleats for cracks is very thin pieces of parchment which some violin suppliers sell. Unless you’re a vegan of course. It’s very strong and do...

RE: HELP! soundboard cracked!

@koendb I would glue with Titebond and clamp like a normal joint but the longer you leave it the harder it will be for the edges to meet together. When you’re gluing the bracing I would fix it with th...

RE: Not New Here But Realized I Needed More Help

@bpower The Bailey workshop is located in a good area on the west coast and not too far from Glasgow airport so it’s a good place to start from, just don’t go in July or August the west is full of mid...

RE: What would you like to see next?

@koendb Carved solid top is actually easier than an acoustic flat top because there’s no radius dish or thickness sanding involved. The gluing surface between the front/back and ribs is flat, which ca...
