@94dodgedude Oh right. I always forget about those. I think they are similar to the classic Gotoh truss rods. I guess the idea behind them is that the u channel adds stiffness to the neck.

@mattbeels it's a stewmac truss rod: It's definitely bigger than others I've seen but I like my necks a little bit chunky so no problem there.

I did a couple of trial runs with that, printing the photo onto paper and cutting it into a scratchplate shape, putting that on the guitar, and making sure that the grain lines ran where I wanted them...

@tv Aye for sure, I've been doing that with the bandsaw it's pretty much standard practice for me, it ain't off until it's unplugged.
