I have gone through quite a few amps and a shed load of pedals. I could make some good noises but getting from one type of sound to another was taking time..... I sold the lot and bought a Fractal Aud...

We have talked loads about guitars, most of which need to be plugged in to make a noise...... What are you using to make a noise?

Try putting just a little more tension on the rod to see if that stops the rattling - a tensioned rod should not rattle - maybe it is just loose?
