Recently the forums seem to have hit a critical mass of activity where quite often messages have dropped out of the ‘recent posts’ window before I (and I suspect others) have read them. Is it possible to convert this to a scrolling window so it is easier to check back on a larger number of recent posts than can currently be displayed?

@darrenking Yep, I’ve noticed this too and keep meaning to mention it. The only way I can keep up with all the posts is to click the “Subscribe to this post” box at the bottom. This, of course, fills up my email inbox, which is annoying. It would be better if their was a way to scroll through all the recent posts and their replies.
Make guitars, not war 🌍✌️🎸
I have too many guitars...said no one in the world..ever!

I think Mark's pretty limited in what he can do re functionality of the site.
The "forum" functionality is an add-in that's bolted (or, given that this is Mark, "carefully crafted") into the underlying WP site.
There are a few config options that *can* be changed, but aspects like changing a window into a scrolling window would require the coders who provide the add-in to change the functionality of the add-in.
🙁
You're right in activity levels here though - it seems to have got quite busy of late. The website traffic stats must make interesting reading @markbailey ... ??
