I'm still getting by with my hand-powered Mirka sanding block. It's the one with the dust extraction holes, so I just stick the pipe from that into the Dysan hosepipe and it seems to work OK.
But agree completely with the comment re Abranet. It seems expensive until you realise that it lasts way way longer than "ordinary" sandpaper and is way more effective too.
An electric Mirka random orbital sander ... hmmmm ... when's my birthday??
Highly recommended, TV...
I have too many guitars...said no one in the world..ever!
New bench made over the weekend, and found the bobbin sander...
Hi David,
What are your thoughts on the Triton stuff?
Cheers,
Russ
The original one I was sent blew within 24 hours. They replaced straight away and this one has been going for the last 3 years. They aren’t Jet/Axminster but for the money they aren’t too bad. It’s the only Triton item I have though so can’t really say on their other products.
I’ve got the same model - it works fine - extraction works well...
Did manage to connect the blow on my shop vac instead of suck once - the surround ring hit the ceiling......
Measure once........ Measure again......... Sod it - make tea!
Chisel and rasp arrived - Post Office had been looking after them for a few days.
Chisel is brilliant - thanks!!
Rasp is also an answer to a problem - I bought another one but couldn't get it to work as well as the one I had used at Baileys - just tried this one on some scrap. Already for the acoustic and a bass..........
Will I get away with the bass as it isn't adding to my guitar total........
Measure once........ Measure again......... Sod it - make tea!
If I ordered a little Triton 1400watt JOF001 router, and by some clerical error, a big Triton 2400watt TRA001 router got delivered instead, would I be right in thinking that (all ethical considerations aside) I should return the big router because it’s actually too big and cumbersome for my guitar building needs?
Jack of all trades and master of my own destiny. It’s only a small destiny.
I have several routers but the one I use most is my (second hand) Dewalt DW621 - same model Mark uses - that claims to be 2hp so 1875 Watts - so somewhere between - I have my extended base on a cheaply but that is 2200 Watts but only gets used when I need the extended base - also have a little Bosch POV 600 which is 600 Watts.
Sometimes a small base is good but round pointy horns the big base can make it easier to avoid the router tilting......
That may not have helped......
Measure once........ Measure again......... Sod it - make tea!
For *most* guitar routing jobs, I use my ancient (1980s vintage) b&q no-name handheld router. Yup, it’s lasted 35-odd years (though it did bugger all for the first 25 of those). It’s small, light, easy to handle, and does the job without fuss. I’ve got other 1/4” routers because .... mainly because I thought they’d be “better” than the vintage one (they’re not particularly better). I’ve also got a big blue Bosch 1/2” job, but I rarely use that on any guitar related jobs.
if you might have need of a big Triton router for other jobs, then you might just have been hypothetically lucky, but you’ll probably still end up buying the smaller one too.

Yup. That’s kinda what I’ve been thinking. This will be my first router. I don’t want to spend my time wrestling with something that’s stronger than I am.
Unless, of course, a heavier router is more stable...

@jamesbisset Some 1/2" routers come with an interchangeable collet? Check - there may be a 1/4" and 8mm collet included. If that is the case BONUS! If not then you will need to get a smaller one for sure...
