Hi Everyone, I’m Meenu Hinduja and my husband Dheeraj Sudan, run a business. I’m looking to get started with building my own guitar. What are the basic tools I absolutely need to begin with? Any suggestions on essential tools for a beginner?

Regards

Dheeraj Sudan and Meenu Hinduja

Hello and welcome!

If you sign up for Mark's course there's a list of essential tools included. The course is designed to be accessible, so while the number of tools available for guitar building is endless, your guided to what you'll actually need.

For me the essentials are a long steel rule, sharp pencil, router (unless you're very handy with chisels), drill, saw, rasp.

To start building a guitar, you'll need a few essential tools to ensure accuracy and smooth progress throughout the process. At a minimum, you'll need measuring tools like a ruler, calipers, and a square to ensure precise measurements for things like neck dimensions, bridge placement, and body shaping. Cutting tools such as a jigsaw or band saw are necessary for shaping the body and neck, while smaller hand saws can be useful for finer cuts. Sanding tools like sandpaper in various grits and a sanding block (or power sander) will help smooth and shape the body and neck. A drill press or hand drill will be needed for accurately placing holes for the neck attachment, bridge, and tuners. Additionally, shaping tools like rasps and files are important for refining the contours and neck profile. You'll also want a set of clamps to hold pieces together during gluing, especially when attaching the neck or fretboard. For fretwork, you'll need a fret saw, fret hammer, and leveling tools. Finally, finishing tools like brushes, rags, and spray equipment will be necessary for applying the finish to the guitar once it's assembled. Having a proper workspace and safety equipment like goggles and dust masks is also essential. As you gain experience, you may find more specialized tools useful, but these basics will set you on the right path.
