Hi everyone
Wow, wish I'd signed up sooner. Some awesome builds I've seen and hope I'll be one to present here eventually, lol. Having been on a course elsewhere, as fun as it was I'd wish I'd arrived here first, but hey ho here I am better late than never
Thoughts on building a 24 " scale, with trem, would this pose a problem, any thoughts / advice greatly received
Sorry forgot to mention, I'm based in Wolverhampton.
Tele build with 24 inch scale inspired by shorter scale similar to suregold
Welcome Andy!
The online electric build course is set around building a 25" scale, but if you've got some experience you might well be able to adapt the plan. I'm sure there are other members who've built different scales and added trems etc.
Good luck and look forward to seeing your builds
Dan
@liebe thankyou for the warm welcome
I'm watching marks video on using an existing neck to measure out the scale length, if I was to create a 25 inch scale, can I use a neck from a standard strat scale to map out 25 inch scale or am I stuck measuring from nut to the 12th of the fretboard to purely determine the accurate scale length, in other words can this be deviated from
Hey Andy, if you have a fretboard or neck in the scale that you want and/or that you're going to use in your build you certainly can use that in your drawing to map out the position of the frets.
I wouldn't skip the drawing phase because it's important for determining the bridge position, you'll need those measurements during the build.
It might just be your shorthand, but don't forget the fender scale is 25.5". Sorry for being pedantic but if your drawing up for 25" and you throw in 25.5" scale fret measurements into the mix you'll have intonation issues.
@liebe awesome thankyou, I quite like shorter more compact feel guitars, I'm guessing the lighter and slightly shorter length guitars are appealing more to me now, been toying with 24.75 gibson scale as mid ground compromise originally basing my idea on duo sonic which is rounded to 24, but see the majority of pre fretted boards are either 24.75, 25, or 25.5
If I. Going to build the neck from scratch I think I'll have more freedom to such customisation over just a body build and after market neck
Welcome to the playground Andrew. Hope you have Fun.
There are people out there that would sell you a 24" premade fretboard. If you are planning to make one yourself you can mark out all the fret positions using the Stewmac Fret Position Calculator. Just make sure you've got a good accurate ruler and a good set of eyes to see it and a set of digital calipers for measuring the positions. It is best to measure every fret position from the nut using the ruler and use the calipers to just double check the distance from fret to fret.
Depending on how much you want to spend and if you're planning on doing more than one then Mark does sell the Bagpress fret slotting jig by Darren King in his shop. He does multiple scale lengths including a 24" scale which makes it much easier.
Enjoy the ride.

Hi Andy and welcome to the Forums, sounds like you're keen to get started with your first build. Great advice always available here and Mark's videos are second to none.
Another consideration, should you decide to buy a premade fretboard (and assuming the width has been tapered), is to make sure that the width taper will match the string spacing and width of the nut you will use and the chosen bridge string spacing.
Enjoy the journey👍😊🎸
Guys , greatly appreciate your input, this helps me out a great deal, thanyou so much
Hi Andy, you can try whatever scale you like but just remember to read the trem routing cavity instructions properly to get the posts in the correct place. Also worth finding out if there's a sweet spot for a 24 inch scale. Like for a 24.75 inch scale I find 630mm works really well.
Fretboard dimensions for me personally are 43mm at the nut and I aim for close to 58mm at the 24th fret. I find that works great with the trems I've used. Usually gotoh 2 point or gotoh floyd. Gives me a nice spacing down the edge and no real risk of pushing or pulling the string off the edge of the baord.
They sell preslotted boards in the shop section which are really nice quality or I have a friend on fb who will slot to whatever scale I want. I only have 24.75 and 25.5 for now but sometimes want to do a bass or uke etc.
Cheers All - welcome Andy!...FYI guys - we can do custom scale lengths like 24" no problem - just order the nearest one then leave a note in the box at checkout or email us with your req...
Measure twice, cut once...
@markbailey thankyou Mark. I'm really enjoying being a member, and your method of tutoring is great
