@russ As you sand the primer to flatten it, the black paint gets sanded off with some of the primer. The bits of primer that are left with black paint still on it, still need sanding. So the tops of the primer get sanded off first and the lower troughs still have black paint so I need to keep sanding until all of the black paint has gone. Wherever it remains, I keep sanding. With it dyeing a contrasting colour, it’s easy to see where has been done and where hasn’t.

@russ It also shows up any scratches, dents, scrapes or anything else. Sometimes you have to sand that much that you sand though in places, that means you have to apply more primer and sand again. It can be advantageous to use a different coloured primer the second time, to contrast the first lot. If you sand through again to the first lot, you know to back off. So long as you don’t sand through to the substrate, a mixture of primer layers will be fine to accept topcoats.

Top finishing @boo, I really need to do more spraying (and building at the moment - now the weathers better I hope to get back in the garage). Bloody snowing the other day up here 🥶
I have too many guitars...said no one in the world..ever!

@deej yeah it was snowing here too and hale stone. 🥶
It was ok sat outside in the sun today when I was sanding the tricky bits and sides of this guitar but I had to wrap up and where a hat.

It looks halfway cool, kind of like a poor man’s crackle finish 😆
@mattbeels I suppose I could clearcoat over it, it might look quite cool. 😆

Thanks @Boo - this thread has taught me a lot about painting / finishing.
More than likely more than I'll ever need to know as I can't see me ever having the time to get into spraying properly, but "never say never".

@tv101 Good, that’s why I do it. 👍
You could still have a go with rattle cans.
I’m going to paint a guitar with rattle cans this summer, just to show that you can get a top quality finish without all the gear.
