I used 6mm plug cutter to make Maple & Mahogany dowels for one of the Necks in pic.
Careful to align the grain.
I think with metal surround, you could do similar and it would work well

Is it possible to do a decorative carve and fill with epoxy then reshape?
You’d have to stop anything bleeding into channel. 
Could be a very cool inlay
