Has anyone else tried painting pickup covers? I had a little fun with some pearl paints on a few pickup covers in the style of EVH.

That idea had never occurred to me!

What paints did you use?  Easier on plastics than metals??

That looks like fun, I'm thinking a nice ST Andrew's cross on future build 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@tv101 I use 1k and 2k products. The plastic P90 covers I used 1k plastic primer and the metal Tele neck cover I used etch primer and a little 1k high build primer (most of it gets sanded back). After primer comes the 1k coloured basecoats. When masking in between colours, leave enough flash off time before applying any masking and then spray the next colour. Remove the masking and then seal with some 2k clear. When cured, sand the clear coat flat with 600 grade paper, clean and flow coat everything again with more clear coat. I got a great finish straight out the gun on these so I didn’t need to flat and polish on this occasion. It’s a faff but it’s a nice aesthetic addition to a build  if it’s right for the particular design.

Yup.  I got that far, and realised that I was lost already.

I’ve got as far as staining and oiling wood.  Beyond that, it’s all black magic.

@tv101 Right OK. To be more succinct, it doesn’t matter if it’s plastic or metal, you just use the right primer. After that, spray the colours and then seal it all in with a few coats of shiny lacquer.

We need a finishing course that covers (pun intended) stuff like this too.

😆

Sand the primer back with 600 grade paper and then apply colour. I used two colours for this job so the first one was white pearl.

Then I masked off for the second colour using lining tape.

@tv101 Maybe we should have a finishing course that goes into more detail. 🤣

Yes, the primer is key. I turned a black P-90 cover to cream color and sealed it with lacquer.

@julian Thank you! I can’t wait to use these paints on a full guitar spray job, I have several pearl colours.
