RE: Ambitious first build - one piece flame maple custom 22

@rockpile99 it's not going to be a super thick body thankfully, so hopefully that will help with the weight. If it comes out at 12lbs I'll just have to suffer. At least it will look great on the wall ...

Wow !!! Are you building a solid flamed maple (1 piece) body? That’s going to be a bit special / unusual. Normally, a 1 piece cap is special enough! Not surprised that piece of wood was so expensiv...

@robin me and my dad did a custom guitar about 8 years ago. We bought a stewmac neck and modeled the guitar after an Ibanez that I had, and still have. So I have some experience with woodworking and g...

I ordered some templates from Guitar Building Templates out of Florida, left my wood in the attic for a couple of months to dry, and did a rough cut on a newly acquired small band saw. Here was the re...

Ambitious first build - one piece flame maple custom 22

So probably 6 or 7 years ago I saw a one piece flamed maple blue Suhr and thought that was one of the coolest looking guitars I've ever seen. It was $7500 so there was no way I could afford it. This ...

RE: Starting the process, guitar number 1

@peebee 40mm isn’t too bad, there are thinner ones out there for sure. What‘s the thickness of the bottom of your neck pocket? 10mm minimum will do and judging from the photos it looks like you have ...

RE: Starting the process, guitar number 1

Thanks Matt, it is 40mm thick, I think that the area that maybe too thin is the neck pocket and how much glue contact area there is, but still toying with using it. A bit more done, carved the belly c...

@peebee I think the carve on the upper horn looks great. How thick is the body then?

RE: Starting the process, guitar number 1

A bit more finessing today. I adjusted the carve on the lower horn, made it deeper than I finished it yesterday. I think also for the real body I'm not sure that I would do the carve on the top horn.....

Good job @peebee Glad to hear you were able to work around that neck joint problem! Looks like you’ve got some carving to do, best of luck!
