RE: Explorer (or maybe LP) with Floyd Rose

@steveh I usually go to p320 before applying finish. Before staining, I lightly moisture the surfaces and let it dry, to raise the grain. Then a light pass with p320 again before staining.

RE: Explorer (or maybe LP) with Floyd Rose

@steveh musiclily do a decent routing template, only thing missing is the recess for the floyd but that's not to hard to knock up. I'd recommend grabbing a gotoh floyd, 150 ish but fantastic units....

RE: Explorer (or maybe LP) with Floyd Rose

@steveh Planning and drawing is a useful start. Maybe you could try out the necessary routing for the trem on a cheap piece of wood, to confirm. How is samba wood to work with? I have only used Bosse ...

RE: Installing frets in loose fretboard

@steveh Hi Steve, I've never done it but I have thought about it. Given that Stewmac sell their Fret Arbor Press with a picture of that very process suggests that it can be done I imagine that even...

I’ve just watched this video and I’m sorry, but there is no way that this method would be anywhere near as accurate as simply measuring each fret position from the nut. Every time he measures the next...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh I solved that issue with some 10mm acrylic sheets off ebay, now I can hold my router very flat while routing. Did it to both my palm routers. Attachment : 20221020_173542.jpg Atta...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh I always do that kind of (tempate) routing on the routing table, if possible. For me it is far too easy to wobble with a handheld router and tilt it a bit. On the other hand, the router table ...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh are you sure the bearing isn't a bit knackered? Also what wood are you using? Bearing whouldn't be leaving any marks like that unless it's really soft wood.

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

Yeah I learned that the same way. In my case it was at the neck socket. Yeah. I almost cried. The fix? Well as some may recall, I grew up in an auto body shop so the fix was body filler. Not auto body...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh Any thoughts how I can make this ok, without it looking like a dog’s dinner? Or should I chalk it up to experience and start with another blank? I was thinking, reduce the top as @njs says,...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

Got enough thickness to take the top of the neck down? Remember to include the fretboard thickness. Like if you want 21mm at the first and your board is 6mm then minimum neck thickness is 15mm and so ...

@rathius I use regular car matt 1k, so simple, dry sand very lightly after to remove any overspray or that but there's none of this wet sanding or polishing. I ALWAYS sand through gloss lol Look at...
