Answer to: Recalcitrant Fret Ends

I usually apply a couple of drops of thin superglue to all fret ends as soon as they are hammered in and seated correctly. But luckily so far I haven't had any "stubborn" fret ends to deal with. If it...

RE: Fret Jig

@simecircle Check your jig using a fret space calculator. Maybe some templates are already compensated and others are not? On the other hand, the difference is only half a tang width, so maybe it does...

RE: Fret Jig

@simecircle Yes there should be a tiny offset, at least compared to using a zero fret. I have a template from Rall, and there is markings for Saddle/Zero fret. The slot for this is a tiny bit wider an...

RE: Going the other way this time-A Baritone?

@wolframmalukker I went for a simpler "f-hole". I just did a weight relief chamber on one side of the body and added the f-hole for looks. I forgot to seal the inside of the chamber for moisture, tho...

RE: Explorer (or maybe LP) with Floyd Rose

@steveh Planning and drawing is a useful start. Maybe you could try out the necessary routing for the trem on a cheap piece of wood, to confirm. How is samba wood to work with? I have only used Bosse ...

RE: Suggest me the best guitar | Julio Herrera

@julioherrera If it is your first guitar build, I would recommend to follow Marks course on this site and build a Bandsman (or one with the same construction principle). I learned a lot when building ...

RE: Preserving the nut line when cutting headstock angle

That is how I do it. On my last build I cut a shallow slot (~0,5mm) with the exact thickness of the nut, and then just shaped the nut and dropped it in the slot.

Finally (almost) done. I still have to make a little cover plate for the truss rod and maybe adjust the slots in the nut a tiny bit. American walnut top, bosse cedar body and neck and some white venee...

RE: Ever get the feeling that a build is cursed?

@steveh I always do that kind of (tempate) routing on the routing table, if possible. For me it is far too easy to wobble with a handheld router and tilt it a bit. On the other hand, the router table ...

RE: Build #3 (another original design)

Don't forget that the necks usually are a bit thicker at the heel end and thinner at first fret. So maybe shim up the headstock end a millimeter or two? If I undertand your setup correctly, that is.

@rathius This time you will make it! Maybe a simple checklist with the right sequence plus all dimensions and cautions noted would help? I find it very easy to miss a step or forget which measures are...

RE: Kalimar's First Guitar Build from Scratch

@kalimar Bummer! If the shank on the router bit is dirty or scratched it can work itself loose. Sometimes you can hear it happen and manage to stop in time.

RE: Kalimar's First Guitar Build from Scratch

@kalimar That taper jig looked more complicated than the whole guitar build. 😀 Good tools does half the job, as we say in Sweden.

Yeah, and a tear-out when routing the neck pickup cavity. But it will be hidden when the pickup is mounted, so I didn't try to patch it up.
