I was going to call this episode 'Return of the King' but thought better of it...

Anyhow it is good to be back - hope to see you there: 1pm Weds and Sat is the new normal

Today I'll be gluing up the neck laminates including black pinstripes - that is a total of 9 pieces of wood to glue super accurately - so no pressure then..why not do it live! I'm going to show you a little trick to make it a bit easier...

Measure twice, cut once...

I'm going to have a go at that too. My maple neck blank is wide enough to spare a 20mm slice off the side, and I'll sandwich that between the mahogany that I've got left. But the solid maple will be first, so I'm obviously going to have to build a third one. I can see how this gets addictive.

Hi everyone!

Great show. If the venues open up, I'm sure Mark and Carol can SMASH it in Panto (oh no they won't)... 🙂

Would really like thoughts/opinions from the collective on the dot inlays.

I'm going for the EVO Gold fret wire (gold/brass colour). The copper tube did get hidden a bit but still looked nice and would go with the EVO fret wire. The aluminium looked good too but might "clash" with the EVO. That said, fret wire can change but inlay dots won't.

Would appreciate thoughts.

Cheers.

I just watched it, on Bailey-Player.

Great session (as usual) and just what I wanted to see as I'm planning a laminated neck with pinstripes as my next neck build (whenever that might happen).

Where do you buy decent lengths of the 0.6mm veneer (or whatever) for the pinstripes?

Obviously, this guitar is *nothing* to do with me, but as you asked for opinions ...

What I think would look really cool is ... inner dots in something that matches the fretboard material, with the outer ring in something dark and contrasting to the fretboard, to properly "frame" the dots.

Might even look like the outer rings had just been pressed into the board?

An ebony - or walnut to match the body - dowel, with the centre drilled out.

That'd work ... though it'd need some careful drill control!

Another thought @rashdown_online

Drill a 5mm hole for 4mm dots.

Or a 6mm hole for 5mm dots

Or (etc).

Place the dot carefully in the middle of the over-sized hole.

Fill the outer ring of the hole with black superglue.

Genius, or what?

I bought the ash and fumed eucalyptus veneer I used on my Firebird from spec.veneers on eBay - I need strips 1 metre long - I did scrape (carefully) the veneer before gluing.   They supply it rolled - one lot was damaged in the post but they replaced and shipped next day.

Measure once........
Measure again.........
Sod it - make tea!

Woah! just caught up today because I’ve been finishing my workbench and what should I spy, but a 45° cut on the corner of the BaileyBench.

Nobody told me! I’ve just got a 90° corner!

What gives? Does every self-respecting guitar maker have a single-cut workbench? What does it allow you to do? Is this the difference between bodgery and mastery? Help!

Jack of all trades and master of my own destiny. It’s only a small destiny.

Hi James,

I think I remember Mark explaining it in a previous session. I think it's to make some clamping jobs easier. 🤔

@tv101

You could try Timberline or David Dyke, both are top quality instrument wood suppliers. I'm not sure what they have at the moment but their web sites are easily found with a Google search. I've purchased from them and that are very helpful. Tonetech did have some but I don't think they have it any more.

I used to have one like that on my folding Black & Decker workbench. Sadly it wasn't due to a great master plan, I had a plank clamped to the bench and managed to cut through both bits. I thought the saw was getting blunt but all was not lost, the bit of bench came off cleanly and it glued back on again. If I had known it was going to be trending I would have left it and claimed to have invented the concept.

It’s easier to clamp a neck when carving..a trick I learned at the workshop and I have done the same on my benches...it works a treat.

@TV101 I bought mine from David Dyke for the two I’ve done and they were very good..
