Hi friends,

So I have a couple of p90s and a cut off Tele style. Bridge. Do you think I can follow along the course without too much added headache rather than use humbuckers and the Gibson style bridge?

Here's a photo of what I have. Thanks for your input

@kalimar surely can. With P-90s you are gonna need a smaller diameter flush trim bit and with fender style bridge, no neck break angle but completely straight with neck string height of 11.5-12mm as opposed to 16mm for tune o matic style bridges.

@kalimar Are you going to make a set neck or a bolt-on? If you make the set neck like in the course (starting with about the same blank size), you will have plenty of material in the heel area to match any type of bridge. You just trim off the excess material when fitting the neck.

@swepri for my very first build I want to follow the course. So I opted to purchase a TOM bridge and 3x3 tuners. However I'll still use my P90 pickups

Thanks @clinton - I may opt to purchase a tuno-matic in that case. Mainly because this is my very first build from scratch 😀

Cheers and all the best

@kalimar But your fender type bridge is easier because you don't need any neck angle, that bridge you have looks very simple and maybe good for a first go.

Ah cool! I'm still watching the videos so I'm hoping to better understand the process of making the neck.
thanks!

@kalimar Hi and welcome to the forums, like you I’m just started on my first scratch build, so a bit nervous and excited about the journey ahead. There’s lots of great advice to be had from experienced builders right here without a doubt but can I just suggest that you go through the “Design you own guitar “ course and draw your plan, then move on to “Build your own electric guitar” course and go through all the course material several times (I enrolled in January and have been doing just that until now and making my jigs/patterns etc. Like yourself I had loads of questions but going through the process via the videos has helped to answer these. After all, we all want to enjoy the process and end up with something we can play and be proud of.
Enjoy the ride👍😃🎸
Brian.

Here is a tip. When in doubt we are here for you. Correction In the video I said 22mm thickness on my neck blank but it is actually 24.5mm.

Nominal routing depth for neck pockets for fender style bridges with 21-22mm thick neck blanks, 5-6mm fretboards. Start off at 16mm neck pocket route depth then check to see where you are at in need to go route deeper 1mm to even 0.5 at a time to attain the optimum 11.5-12 mm string height target

@clinton thanks so much for all of that. Since this is my very first build I'm going to go ahead and purchase a TOM bridge só I don't need to make modifications for the course.

However, I really want to make a bolt on neck for guitar 2!

Thanks

That’s great. Yes start with a TOM. Get that under your belt first.
