If you have ever wondered why really pretty solid wood is so expensive, here is part of the answer. This quilted maple veneer is priced at £100+VAT pm2!

Never mind the cost, is it wide enough for a guitar body?

@darrenking That is why I can’t consider using expensive wood like that for the foreseeable future, the cost is out of my price range now, too much debt! I have actually found a nice piece of mahogany (I think) that used to be a window sill in my house and then it was used to support our range cooker. Since we got a new cooker, I have rescued the plank and cleaned it up through my planer. It’s now 18mm thick and I’m thinking of using it for a top. I’ll go take a picture. Back in a mo

@darrenking I think that quilted stuff is unbelievably beautiful and I agree, I would only ever buy it for caps. It’s just ridiculous to consider having a full thickness blank.

This is the best I can do right now. An old mahogany (I think) window sill, 18mm thick.

I have no money right now but my guitar building habit must be satisfied. I am eyeing up other bits of the house as we speak! I’ll continue this conversation in a separate thread, I don’t want to highjack this one further, sorry.

That’s a nice quilted maple front door that you used to have ...

@tv101 I wish! Unfortunately it’s one of those new fangled, bullet-proof composite front doors, could be a bit heavy for guitar making and a bugger to cut! 🤣

@boo I’m not trying to sell it! That’s the veneer merchant price!

I do love the fact that you are trying to turn as much of your house as you can into guitars before you sell it. You hear about people taking all the light fittings and bulbs with them when they move. Sounds like you buyers are going to need to bring window sills, floor boards and skirtings! 😂😂😂

@boo looking at the degree of interlocking grain I’d probably ID this as sapele but no matter, if it’s straight grained it should still make lovely body or  parts for a composite neck.

@darrenking Can you have a look at the other post I’ve created and see what you think. I am definitely NOT on the scrounge, I just thought it would be an interesting thread for people to discuss using cheap woods if money is tight.
