'twas a gift from someone who didn't have room to store it.  Now gets used for all sorts, not just guitar-making.

Top Tip from Tony on using bandsaws ....  you really shouldn't try putting your finger through it. 

Luckily, I led with the knuckle and either the blade wasn't quite sharp enough, or I pulled my hand back in time, and the blade only got as far as the knuckle.

It was a bit ouchy though, and I needed a plaster on it.

I know .....although the picture was the right way up it turned it 90 degrees when I uploaded on to here..,weird. I do like lying down when I do things though ?

Added a few more (and an upright of band saw) my sander is a minime of Bills. I have a bobbin sander under a pile of junk the missus put in the garage.  Will post that when I get to it.

I'm jealous Bill - my workshop is definitely lacking a decent drum sander ..

Here's the bandsaw with its neighbours - the drill press and bobbin sander ... and you can also see the (blue) water pipe in the rear corner!

I'm in the middle of a few projects, hence the workshop is a little messy.  Usually it's totally clean and tidy.

She works well - I made a template to cut the ends of the sandpaper - only drawback is the lack of table extensions so you have to support long bits in and out of the machine - Axminster’s current baby sander is a revised version so should be able to get spares if needed.

Another to add to the list  

Electric rather than air. 

I’ve just used my Mirka to sand my Firebird build - I wondered about spending sooo muuuch money but it is very easy to use and has done a brilliant job and the extraction (into a Titan vacuum) works really well.....

Love mine Bill. It gets a lovely finish.

You can never spend too much on a good sander and Mirka and Festool are certainly hard to beat. Difficult to justify the difference in price until you use them and THEN you understand!! The balance, the stability. It’s not that nothing else will do, but scour EBay and if you see a bargain snap it up. Definitely important if you spend time sanding veneer thickness material as I do most of the time.

Another consideration is the quality the abrasives you use. Cheap abrasives may state P240 but there might be some particles of P180 or even P150 and it is these that will leave the noticeable scratches. Higher grade P240 may have a few particles from P220 so the tolerance is much tighter. In short, if you are finding sanding scratches that are difficult to remove then it could be the abrasive that is at fault so try a different brand. They are not all the same.

I'm still getting by with my hand-powered Mirka sanding block.  It's the one with the dust extraction holes, so I just stick the pipe from that into the Dysan hosepipe and it seems to work OK.

But agree completely with the comment re Abranet.  It seems expensive until you realise that it lasts way way longer than "ordinary" sandpaper and is way more effective too.

An electric Mirka random orbital sander ... hmmmm ... when's my birthday??

Class it as essential for some household refurbishment task and use it for guitars the rest of the time.......

The original one I was sent blew within 24 hours. They replaced straight away and this one has been going for the last 3 years. They aren’t Jet/Axminster but for the money they aren’t too bad. It’s the only Triton item I have though so can’t really say on their other products.
