Got a place local to me, modulus amplification.

He has a very good reputation too.

I admit that part of my reason for choosing ampmaker is that he's not a million miles away from me, so I thought I might be able to pop my build over to him for diagnosis if I had any issues.

@tv101 Holy £ucK! Well done sir!

I really want to have a go at this now. Electronics and my soldering skills are dire, it’s my worst area of skill level. I am inept in every way and it’s probably what has discouraged me from doing any fancy split wiring thingy stuff with my guitar builds. I haven’t gone past standard two pickup or one pickup with one volume and one tone control. Building a whole amp feels like climbing Everest without any training or equipment.
However, I feel like it would do me some good, good practice and improve my wiring/soldering skills.
I am seriously going to look in to this further.

Thanks for the inspiration TV. 👍

You’ve done a great job with your amp build. Why don’t you use 18mm ply to make a box, I’ve just made a guitar out of it. It’s strong and can actually look beautiful if you sand it and finish it well.

@boo

I put together a few pedal kits first, for the soldering practice as much as anything.  They’re also a *lot* cheaper (and less dangerous!) than building a valve amp, so seemed like a sensible progression from wiring guitars.

I’d probably not recommend going straight from not-very-good-at guitar wiring into an amp build.  I used a lot of solder putting this kit together, which means a lot of solder joints, which means a lot of potential points of failure and/or a lot of opportunities for component frying.  There’s also a more entry-level kit that you could start with, fewer components, simpler wiring, etc.  I was a little ambitious going for this one, but I already had a basic/clean valve amp, so wanted something a little grittier.

The cab sides are 18mm ply, with oak top & bottom morticed/tenoned into the sides.

It dry fitted together fine.  Just want to get it stained before I glue it together.

😊

@tv101 I shall heed your warning and take your advice on this one I think.

As exciting as it would be building my own amp, a bit more experience would do me a few favours really.

Like you said, there are a lot of places to make mistakes and I don't want to end up blowing it all up as a result of my inexperience.

Pedals it is then.

Glad you got into the workshop to see Mark and Carol, I need to do the same now.

Keep up the good work. 👍
