Sanded it back, applied some stains and finished with many coats of Tru Oil.

Hi John,

How many guitars have you got on the go at one time. All looks very impressive.

Cheers,

Thanks @russ for your kind words. I have about five going at the moment and more to come. Some are necks for existing bodies and some I will be making bodies for as well. So all the necks in this picture are for current builds in one way or another. I don’t keep them in my workshop as they tend to warp so I put them in a corner of my living room instead.

it’s all good fun!

There have been numerous occasions when, if I had a blow torch to hand, things may have take a particularly bad turn!! I have learnt that it is useful to have something valueless and easily breakable to hand most of the time to help one cope with exactly these situations. Big lumps of polystyrene work admirably btw and don’t hurt when you kick them!

@darrenking That is a great idea as well as being amusing! Now we have an actual reuse for polystyrene! ?

@darrenking Could you make me a set of master templates for routing a guitar body please? I have made a 1:1 drawing so could send it you.

it’s for this body shape.

Hi John,

No problem. Do you have the drawing as a PDF or only on paper? Either way its easy for me to do, the paper version just requires a little more time to scan and redraw. Either PM me with the attachments or stick the drawing in the post to my Letchworth address and I'll see what I can do.

Cheers

Darren

I’ve just remembered this reminded me of a CBG I made and used a blow torch to get the burnt look...

Not a proper guitar but still fun and electric. Very south Americana.

I have too many guitars...said no one in the world..ever!

@deej That is cool, it’s something on my list a CBG. I think it looks great and if it plays good and brings musical joy, it is a real guitar! Rock n Roll!

I have done a few @johnnierox-boo and thanks...I prefer number plate CBG’s with proper pickups. The one above uses a piezo pickup.

This Barncaster is finally getting finished off, it’s going to be a Christmas present for someone. I think I can just about get it ready and sell it to them just before Christmas.

I made this Tele type neck out of cherry, with an ebony fretboard and EVO Gold frets. The neck blank I used was a little thicker so I had to route another 3.5mm deeper out of the neck pocket. It’s also slightly narrower than a standard neck so I had to glue some laminate on either side of the neck pocket on the body.

When I originally made this body, I was routing the neck pocket and the router tore off a big chunk of that pesky bit of wood in between the pocket and the neck pickup route (the perineum 🤣). It left a big hole under the end of the fretboard that was really annoying me so I had to fix it. I glued in a piece of maple and then drilled three holes 35mm deep for some bamboo pegs. I chose bamboo because I had some and it’s strong. I bought a tub of bamboo barbecue skewers from Aldi ages ago because I knew they would come in handy for guitar building. I glued them in, snipped them off flush and sanded it all up nice.

Oh yeah, when I glued the laminate into the neck pocket, I screwed the neck on (a nice tight fit) and that acted as a clamp to hold the stuff in place whilst the glue dried. I then shaved off the excess laminate with a sharp blade and cleaned it up with some sandpaper. The neck fits like a dream now.

I’ll have some fun with some stain tomorrow to hide that repair but in the meantime I’ve fitting a narrower bridge, 52mm. Everything lines up nicely, I just have to do a setup!
