@darrenking 's suggestion would make a higher quality repair if done well but it is a bit harder to pull off - you could try this first - you might surprise yourself!

Another option is to bind the 'fretboard' - I would do what @tv101 suggests first (fill it) and keep binding in reserve if not happy with the outcome.

It is not such a big deal as the Truss Rod is pretty much 'set and forget' - so once you get it right it should stay that way, unless you change string guage or experience severe changes in environmen...

ps. The truss rod is not used to set the action - it is for correcting the neck bow caused by string tension (I know you knew that 🙄 )

Hey that is not bad for a first go - I'm sure any of us would be proud of that. Neat coverplate! Sometimes it can be tricky to get an electrical contact with black hardware...you could try roughing up...
