Made my first bolt on following the bolt on course. Just had to do it after watching the recent you tube live streams, I decided on 21 frets. Haha. Access to truss rod however, I opted by the headstock. Been itching to make a Tele just so I know I made one. Just realized however, slipped my mind I did not

lacquer the maple fretboard before fretting. Yikes. I really do not want to take the pre crowned/dressed frets out just to lacquer. I do not have proper nippers as well. What should I do?

That looks good Clinton. You can get very narrow masking tape that model makers use, that might be good to mask off the fret wires while you lacquer the fretboard.

Its OK.You can apply the finish over the frets - file/sand it off later - a lot of factory guitars have been made this way. It is not ideal as it makes repair harder but not the end of the world 🙂

I think I used a 9mm drill but it depends on the tr nut you have - drill a test hole in scrap to make sure. You can always widen the hole if needed with a 10mm.

Measure twice, cut once...

@clinton I enjoy building Teles, they are very easy to make but I have still not clear coated (lacquered etc) a fretboard. I really do like the look of a high gloss fretboard, even on darker woods, not just maple etc.

@clinton Yeah I always prefer having the truss rod adjustment at the headstock end. I never understood why people want it at the other end where it’s so awkward to get to. It’s looking good Clinton, keep the photo updates coming. 👍

@boo my first fender style build. Surprisingly easier. Even the headstock thanks to the bolt on online course.

Ok, so I made my first bolt on. Quite nice from 1 inch thick maple. Question. I have 2 planks of maple enough for 2 parallel style bolt on necks but it is 3/4 inch thick(20mm). Is that thick enough for strenght and stability? I know it is at the cusp. Trying to convince myself not to cut it in strips to laminate to make it thicker. Thoughts?

How about gluing bits on to thicken the ends for the the heel and headstock

@clinton Yeah, do a stacked heal and a stacked headstock if there is enough of it. It will have to be quite a skinny neck profile but it will work. Also, use light gauge strings.

I've made most of my guitars with 20 mm neck blanks, so I don't think there is any problem.
