what makes the Mirka so great?
@jonhodgson So far it’s just so smooth and has an efficient cut. That could also be due to the disks. They are expensive compared to trade standard consumables but the speed at which they cut enables them to last much longer. I’ve also used a spongy backing pad that goes in between the main pad and the disk which protects everything from wearing as fast. The low vibration from the machine itself is very low and will protect the user during periods of extended use. It’s such an improvement from all the bog standard DA air sanders I’ve used over the years, it’s by far the most ergonomic and easy to use.
I’m glad I bought it and I feel that if I am going to use tools a lot, especially to make money with and it’s going to make my life easier, then I will buy them. It is about three times more than I would normally pay for a DA sander and the disks to go with it (this is it’s only disadvantage so far) but I think it’s the best performer and the most economical. Time will tell but I have a good feeling about it, it’s the best I’ve ever used. You would have to use it to feel it.

I don't have a compressor though when the hackspace reopens I'll have access to two, we have a very large one in the metal shop and one smaller one hanging around too (I'd need to sort an airline into the woodshop though).
I could of course consider a compressor for home, but knowing me I'd start off thinking I just wanted something powerful enough for an airbrush and wind up upselling myself to something that would allow me to spray paint a truck in 5 minutes.

Good to know that it's not just me @jonhodgson

Don't believe you @mattbeels.
Pffft, 😆
You mentioned that you’ve heard negative reviews about the AC Mirka but @frocesterbill said that he has one and it’s sweet. What have you heard against it?

I was fairly seriously considering buying one, so I did a bit of Googling.
It's dangerous basing a decision on people's reviews because - typically - people only bother posting reviews if they've had a *bad* experience, plus you're never too sure about whether they're incompetent idiots who don't know how to use tools. But, I read a few negatives about components on the Mirka failing after fairly little use.
Try Youtube. I'm pretty sure I watched a couple of videos from people who seemed to know what they were doing, and they weren't fans of the AC Mirka.
So, I didn't buy one.
And now - starting tomorrow - I've got a whole kitchen to rub down.
Obvs, when it comes to re-painting it, I'm going to talk to @Boo, and try out some metallic paint colours ...

Mark’s Mirka is electrically powered - he used to use air power but he has one of the older Mirkas with an external power supply - see him sanding Roland’s guitar.
My Mirka hasn’t done much work and it does have a 3 year warranty.
Measure once........ Measure again......... Sod it - make tea!
Got some spare (blue) stain???
Not so much, I've only enough powder to make a gallon or so of stain according to the package.
are you sure you wouldn't prefer to stain it blue?
@jonhodgson 🤣🤣🤣🤣💙
