@deej You’re welcome but I need to do a major annual Spring Clean of my workshop (well, the house, the garden, the whole property really) before my wife will allow visitors. Due to covid lockdown, I’ve managed to get lots of work done on the house but that in itself has generated more crap. We will be getting a skip soon and the work will commence in the next few weeks. I’m fed up with all this lockdown, I’ve hardly seen anyone apart from my wife and neighbours for about a year now. When will it end? 😭

@tv101 is going to copy you into an email soon. 👍

Let’s just get together on Jitsi sometime in the next few weeks @boo @deej and have a chat.  Easier than emails ...

Plus, now Deej is wondering and worrying about what it might be.

I only saw this via the stream on Saturday but what an absolutely stunning paint job @boo

You are obviously extremely talented with a spray gun.

I like the fact this is sort of a "trial run" as it's the first time you've used this flake.

How many coats in all do you think this will have on it?

Being on the Isle of Man its very restrictive getting paint supplies sent to here. I currently use Bill at Tonetech and his kit seems really good quality. Not sure if there are any other alternatives out there.

Can't wait to see the next one though. 👍

Trying to make a living out of a hobby doesn't work 🙂

@boo

Saw this and thought that when you get bored of flakes you can have a go at this.

Just skip to 14:10 to see the guitar after the special magic has been sprayed on to it.

@tv101

For me the intriguing thing is that normally that sort of flip flop paint needs a matt black base to work (and this one is working very well), but they seem to have successfully faded it to the stained wood.

@jonhodgson I already ordered some of this chameleon flip paint, it should be here very soon. Although I will be doing more flake and candy guitars, I’m going to try our other special effects paints too. This guitar looks really good and I haven’t seen chameleon paint used as a burst like that before but I think it works. Rock n Roll brother 🤘😁🤘🎸 Let’s get it done.

@tv101 Yeah it’s doable, I can do that. 🤘😁🤘🎸

@jonhodgson It does work over other colours, especially dark ones but it’s fine over all colours really. The differences can be vastly different or sometimes subtly different, depending on the ground coat. On this guitar, the blue dye was quite dark around the edges, he said so himself, so the flip works quite well. But you are right, it is best over black.

@boo I actually wondered if they painted the very edge matt black, but faded it out before the flip flop coat starts to fade, to give a really intensive result on the edges.

@jonhodgson Yeah, it’s entirely possible. He may have tried it on its own first and if it wasn’t as effective as he wanted, he would have blown some standard black/dark base coat around the outside edge to get some proper opacity. I was trying to pause the video to see whether that is what he had done but it’s really difficult to see. It’s really well done, whichever method he has used.
When I try it, I’ll go about it the same way but I’ll have to make my mind up quickly as I don’t have much of the paint.

I’ve bought 1/4 Litre for £50, a small amount.

That’s not as expensive as some but it’s not cheap either.

I’ve got a black Squire Jazz Bass knocking about here so I might have a quick go at the flip burst.

@boo I look forward to seeing your results.

I think the guitar in the video might have looked even cooler if Derek had done multicolour sandback stain finish on the main part of the body, they can look pretty flip-flop in their own right
