Inspired by today's Workshop stream - and that beautiful piece of Walnut that's being turned into (not) Roland's guitar - I went out for a walk around the garden ...

20200808 150200

... no, not the little one on the right, the big one in the middle ...

20200808 150300

... with *walnuts* on it ...

20200808 150356

... how many guitar bodies is that ???

Only problem is that I don't know how old it is, but pretty sure it's not 400 years old.

(Yet).

I’ve just remembered I have slab of black walnut (I got from yandles and sons in Matlock Somerset, just around the corner from Glastonbury.

I should try a (not) Roland guitar curve carve on it....?

Look at the grain on that!  Looks like a 1” slab @deej - thick enough for some curvaceous shaping?

is it wide enough for a single piece top?  Could be a winner ...

Our tree is still standing.  A few squirrels would notice the absence of their walnuts if it went.  There are some more in the garden, but none of that size.

Thanks @TV1010101

it 70mm think and way enough for a full body and enough for a 20 mm cap

i used some on my exotica tribute build..pics here. But this piece I put aside as the grain is awesome. It’s been under some old ash in the garage and watching the (not) Roland raffle build I remembered it’s still there. I have some more that will easily so two more wing caps on some straight through neck builds.

Your pics have reminded me that I found a stack of 8' long, 2" thick walnut boards in a local "timber yard" (its a Norfolk version of what you might assume a timber yard to be) a few months ago.

I didn't buy at the time, but I think I might just have to.

At the time, I was more disappointed when he told me that he'd just given away a large stack of birdseye maple because no-one wanted it ... ARRRGHHHH.

I've got a couple of bits of walnut here, but nothing with a grain pattern anything like as stunning as yours.  You've got to do something special with that!

During this afternoons live chat deej09 and someone else asked for a pic of the first guitar I made 35 years ago, a carved top f hole. It was a prototype using material from the local wood yard in Dumfries near where I live.

Very ambitious for a first try and I made lots of mistakes like setting the neck angle before gluing the body up, and not quite getting the f holes lined up. However it plays ok.

first guitar I made after completing the course with Mark last year. The guitar from the course was stunning and is on the forum somewhere (the one with buckeye burl top.

This guitar was made using an old teak shelf. I cut the shelf into 2 inch strips and glued them together to get the required piece of wood for the body and the neck.

Behind the guitar is another I made using a kit. I changed the neck, headstock and body shape of the kit.

Not finished this guitar yet. Made of a 100 year old door! I made two guitar shapes, hollowed out both (top of one and bottom of the other) and cut slots on the top one and access hole on the bottom one.

There is a solid strip down the centre for pickups etc.

The neck will be maple and I will add a single (bridge) pickup with a volume control. It plays well with the neck added.

I made a few body shapes using my own templates. They will be around 27mm thick so i will have to double up or put a cap on to bring a body up to thickness.

This is more of my experiments in using tools and shaping wood. I will move on to good wood later. There is so much I still have to learn and am too tight to waste good wood!

Like the outline of the guitars-from-a-100-year-old-door - photo is a bit small to see much of it though

🙁

I've heard that teak is difficult to glue did you have to treat it with anything first

they all look great...it was me @rocknroller912 that asked to post the archtop...a lovely example and great skill..

an idea for a thread.. people post templates they have Of bodies headstocks etc. to scale if they can have access to scan at 1:1 scale?

on a separate point..

Mark..the quote option isn’t working properly..you may want to look at that.

@david-johnson09

i think posting templates on 1:1 scale would be difficult and printing would be even more so. Starting with a blank page and a line as Mark does is much easier. Also well known brands like Gibson are now saying that their shape is copyright and taking legal action, so copying these templates as people have done in the past is probably not a good idea.

Seemed like a good idea at the time so I’ll have to finish it now. Started with a perfectly good tele copy and bits of the 100 year old door...
