Last Friday I saw what may very well be the most emotionally memorable gig of my life. Jon Gomm at the Haverhill Arts Centre with a total audience of no more than 40-50. This was his first proper gig back after lock down but he played an absolute blinder. The setting was perfect and some of his revelations about his personal life and ongoing mental health issues were extraordinarily intimate and made for the most amazing atmosphere in the room. The songs from his new album, The Faintest Idea, were beautiful and his descriptions of their origins, at times, heartbreaking. His encore rendition of Passion Flower, the song that changed his life, was eclipsed, in my mind at least, by his final song of the evening. This was also from his latest album, but was a cover of βSong For a Rainy Dayβ (
)Β by his long time, but very sadly late, friend, the legendary busker Jonny Walker. For this, he unplugged his guitar and jumped down from the stage and performed completely un-amplified, no more than 6 feet from where I was sitting, in true busker style. A beautiful song performed in way that was a wonderful tribute to his friendβs performing life.
If you are not familiar with Jonβs work then please try to see him on his current tour, he will change your perception of what a guitar (guitarist) is capable of but not in way that will discourage you. The way he plays is so completely beyond what most of us could ever aspire to, and there is a very good reason for this, that it is almost as if his instrument has been elevated to a completely different level.
