Prompted by the discussion in @darrenking's thread about his latest build ... I wonder whether it would be worthwhile having a new section on the forum called (something like) "Pickups & Parts"?

There isn't an obvious place for us to gather together discussions about various options - makes/models/etc - of the components that we all need to make our guitars, and so there's a risk (likelihood) that a lot of useful info and opinion will get lost in other discussions, rather than being obviously available to everyone else who'll come along with the same questions.

@markbailey - I have no idea whether your forum plug-in makes it easy to add another section, but I'm guessing that it's do-able?

Sounds like a great idea

One discussion on pickups - pros & cons of different brands, etc (like on your on-going build discussion)

One on bridges - again, pros & cons of different brands, or designs to use on different type of builds.

One on them systems.

One on tuners.

Different pots / switches.

Wiring options that work well.

Could be a useful reference resource, and easily found by new members.

??

Autocorrect had autocorrected "trem" to "them" when I'd listed some suggestions of what could be covered in a new section.  And because the edit button isn't working, I couldn't uncorrect the autocorrect.

So I added a new post to clarify what I meant to avoid confusing people.

Some people still confused though ...

😉

GREAT IDEA! Leave it with us...we do have several sections 'unpublished' so I'll look into it...

Measure twice, cut once...

I bought some used pots from ebay, I got into a message discussion with the guy and told him what I was doing, I think he has sent me his entire spares box. So now I've got 20 pots, but no nuts and washers for them.

Trouble is @Robin, that the diameter of the threaded part varies.  I've got a box of washers & nuts, but odds are that they wouldn't fit your pots.

New ones generally come with more washers/nuts than you need - assuming that you've thicknessed your top accurately and don't need to use any as spacers inside the cavity.  Measure what you've got, order some new ones as well - same diameter! - and swap the spares from the new ones onto the box of bits.

You're also going to have a bit of a session with your multimeter, working out resistance values and log/lin (unless that happens to be marked on the pots)!!

@tv1010101  They're all marked 500, A's and B's, so thats not a problem. The theaded parts all measure 8mm, I'm assuming that they're metric. I'll pop into my old workplace when I'm home and borrow their thread gauges to check the pitch, then I'll find some on ebay.

@robin

Nuts and washers shouldn't be too hard to find. If you have calipers measure the diameter of the threaded bit on the pot. Exact metric measurements have a standard pitch size (distance between the threads) eg 10mm might be 1.5mm pitch or metric fine would be 1.25mm pitch. A screw pitch gauge is and easy way of finding out, should be able to get one from any good tool supplier.

Once you have the diameter and thread pitch ordering on Amazon or eBay is easy. Same with washers.

If the diameter is not an exact metric size it will be old fashioned Imerial/Inch sizes which are much harder to find as there are so many different varieties of thread.

Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.

@rocknroller912  thanks for the pointers on thread sizes. They're 8mm diameter and a very fine thread, finer than the standard metric fine. I'm counting 8 pitches over a 6mm length, so I'm thinking it's 0.75 pitch. I'll pop into my old workplace while I'm home for the next few days and borrow their thread gauges and check it properly.

Just managed to pick up these burstbuckers (Gibson 2005/2007) bargain at 60 quid. I may take the covers off and put I my own build. They are modern PAFs so should be nice. I’m still after some T Tops...

I've got a set of similar looking Gibson PAFs.  Not sure (no clue) re the age, but they sound pretty good.

Too good really, because I put them into a guitar that I was going to "let go", only to decide that the p'ups were too good, or too suited to the guitar, that I had to keep them, and the guitar that they're in!
