While waiting on something to show up for my bass build I got on with something else. A new guitar body blank, not sure what it'll be yet but I'm very pleased with how things are going. I'll get a pic of the neck blank later but here's the body so far after sanding back and wiping down with white spirit.

Very nice indeed. What is the wood again? Looks stunning with the blue epoxy.

While the finishing of the bass takes ages due to the weather I decided to get on with the tele build. I've roughed out the neck and today was radiusing the board and doing fret markers.

Also got some new supplies in, didn't realise bass string packets were so big even though it makes sense lol

Headstock sorted and main neck carving done, I'll sort the heel once I've done the neck pocket.

Not much time today but I did my usual upper fret access carve using a bowl and dish router bit.

Yeah, it's the wee intro to your YouTube videos that I was enjoying. Great wee riff that you've created there. 👍

Litle update, got the pickup cavities done and the control panel. Recessed for the nobs because it'll have a couple of push push pots and they need room to go down to pop up, this means I can have the nobs level with the guitar top.

Also spoke to the customer who wanted an awkward jack socket, that was a bit hairy making the space for the actual socket.

@nsj

I like the jack socket set into the angled face like that. I was going to do it on my first build, I drew it out, but then chickened out.

@robin he got the idea from Charvel. Doing the angled area was fine, making the plate fit was fine, making actual socket fit with a lead plugged in was less fine! Lol

Well the yew didn't work out, developed a hell of a back bow, broke the trussrod trying to straighten it lol.

Anyway, I'm currently making a new neck from plain Brazillian mahogany. Tried a new way of doing the access for the spoke wheel trussrod too.

20231204 162234

Also tried the switch where the customer wanted it but it was terrible, way to close to the pots! Routed out a ragged looking area, lined it with superglue and rosewood sawdust to create the illusion of a natural deformity then added more of the same resin. It'll look completely like it's always been there lol

Oredered some long shaft micro switches to try but failing that I'll use a les paul switch routing template and place the switch further forward like the music man jp that the customer gigs with.

Cheers

So we finally decided to copy the switch location like his musicman JP6 guitar which works out nicely. I thought it'd be in the way but it isn't. I drilled from the front with a 3mm bit, then used a 35mm forstner from the back. Finally used the radian rabbit bit for doing binding with the 3mm binding option.

Just sorting out a cover, I'll use 2mm magnets for it.

Headstock is sorted on the new neck, also radiused and fitted fret markers. I filled a couple of short lengths of the 6mm alumium tubing then once cured I sliced it up.

Finally got the first coat of finish on the body, and added my mates logo to the back of the headstock. Chris Mckean Music
