Looks great @boo and I hope it works out with your invisible neck joint!

It seems your shop got a bit of a tidy or am I mistaken?

Practice on scrap...

@mattbeels Well spotted Matt, it has indeed been tidied (a bit). I had a bit of a clear out and it’s freed up quite a bit of space but I need to go further. I’ll be renting a skip soon, we have a load of crap to get rid of so I’m sure I can find more in my workshop. 😆

@mattbeels because calling it a milk bottle would be silly.

Boo - why would it not work?  Unless the finish sinks into the join, or sinks differently into the different wood, then surely - once painted - you're not going to be able to see any variation in the top?

And I'm guessing that - with your standards of preparation - you're pretty unlikely to see any difference levels of sinkage (is that a word?).

@mattbeels We call it a skip because that’s what it’s called. In life, people, places and objects have “names”. This is done so we, the people, know how to describe things and communicate with each other in a consistent and robust manner. If we didn’t have names for everything, the world would be very chaotic, even more than it is right now. 😁

@tv101 My concern is that because it’s wood and there is a joint, one bit of wood going into another, it may become visible over time. It won’t stop the guitar working or anything like that, I’m just unsure that with expansion and contraction, due to temperature and humidity, any amount of careful preparation will permanently prevent the joint being visible over time. I’ll put it though it’s paces when it’s done, I’m sending it to a friend in Brighton to test whilst I make him another one.

For sure, that's always a risk.  But it's the same risk when you joint a body (albeit that's often the same timbers being joined) and as long as that's done properly, those joints stay hidden when painted.

With your skills, and the amount of prep you're doing on that body, I doubt you've got much reason to worry.

But, if you are, leave it in primed state for a while.  If it's going to sink into the join, then fix it whilst still primed, before you paint it in pink flip-flop glitter.

@tv101 It’s my standard procedure to leave primer for a few days whilst the solvents evaporate and leave the solids to sink into all the sanding scratches. It won’t sink into the joint because it’s all sealed up with epoxy. I think I’m unnecessarily worried because it’s something I’ve not done before so you are probably right, I should should stop worrying.
Oh yeah, this is the Bandsman so this paint job will be something different. It’s the Strat I’m doing in pink flake.
Are you sending me the cases for your effects pedals, I thought you wanted them painting? ✨✨✨✨😁✨✨✨✨

@tv101 🤣🤣🤣🤣 No, don’t worry, I’m not going to paint your stuff in pink flake. I’m serious, I wouldn’t do anything like that, I’m not going to paint anyone’s gear in something they aren’t going to like just for my amusement.
