Thanks for the advice @Rocknroller912, I've plenty maple offcuts and it's not really in a conspicuous place so the bigger bit that I cut out will be mostly hidden inside the neck pocket.
Good luck. Repairs and restorations are about deceiving the eye, so straight lines don’t always have to be at 90 deg they can be at an angle to match grain lines.

but I haven't got any rosewood to make dust from.
Ahhhh ... but I have
😉
I've got a stack of little pots with dust saved from sanding jobs on different woods, on the basis of "that'll come in handy one day". Think I've still got your address from the veneers package.

Thanks for that, you're a star.
I took your advice and chiselled a bit out to make a straight line and glued a piece in. I had two goes at it, my first effort was pathetic so I chiselled out a bigger bit and tried again. Not invisible, but most of it will be once it's in place. I was having so much fun with that repair, I almost forgot to go for my 2nd covid jab.
I would say that’s a pretty good repair and it looks like the grain lines match. Don’t be put off by how many attempts it takes before you are happy with it. I’ve seen web posts from top professional repairers who say it can take months to get a good result. That’s why they are so good, because they don’t settle for sub standard work. Every repair is different so it’s a real skill.

No worries Robin. I was pretty sure that I had some when I posted last night, but didn't want to offer it until I'd checked today.
You do realise that the bit @Boo sends you will be painted in pink glitter paint before he sends it??
a 7 hour round trip away.
Or, about 100miles away on Scottish roads. Which is generally about 20miles as the crow flies on the West coast ...
😆
(I'm only jealous).

You're really not far wrong there, it's a 130 mile drive there, 60 miles as the crow flys almost directly west from where I am. I hadn't factored in for @boo 's glittery paint, that'll make some real magic dust when sanded.
You're really not far wrong there,
Although I thought I was probably exaggerating, I've spent enough time driving around the West coast of Scotland to know that it probably wasn't a huge exaggeration!
But then driving in that part of Scotland isn't about getting from A to B in as little time as possible, it's about the experience ...

it's not like one those xmas cards that spreads glitter everywhere when you open the envelope is it.
@robin No, I would never send anything with metal flake, it gets everywhere, it’s a nightmare. It’s all over my workshop, I’ve got it in the house and in the garden (the decking looks spectacular in the sun). 🤣🤣🤣🤣✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ Besides, I had already posted it before I thought about playing a joke like that (I wouldn’t, you would be in so much trouble with your wife and so would I). 🤣🤣✨✨

@boo's little bit of glitter free rosewood arrived this morning. I didn't take any chances, went out to the shed and opened the envelope very carefully, but still got a fright.
It's a perfect match boo, some dust sanded from that filled the little chip beautifully, thanks again.

@robin Good, I’m glad it was the right colour and nice job on the repair. 👍🏴

No, I wouldn’t send any metal flake, I need it all. 😆
I guess I’ll be in my element on Halloween 🎃 Boo 👻
