Have accidentally deleted my entire "Robin's build #003" post, I thought I just resume from where I was. Maybe a short recap first.

This is where it started.

Fast forward to now.

Something went wrong when I was fitting the neck/body joint. I got a good clean joint but I must have altered the neck angle and height while I was doing it. So I've had to sink the bridge into the top to get the action anywhere near reasonable.

20230214 190449

I've had a trial assembly.

20230219 174741
20230219 174805
20230219 174829

After sinking the bridge a little bit more it plays quite well.

@robin Is that an oak top with mahogany back?

Regarding the bridge, I've seen people make a feature of it so it looks like you sank it on purpose. Might be something to consider.

Ps the "F holes" are a nice change from the norm, liking that idea.

@nsj

Yes, it's oak and mahogany. The oak was a whisky barrel top, horrible to work with, I'll not be doing again.

I think the sunken bridge looks not too bad, what would you suggest to make it look its meant to be like that?

I'm not that keen on the traditional f holes, I wanted something a bit more modern looking.

@robin This is s cool project, it’s looking superb. The thing with the bridge is fine, it’s something I’ve seen before and doesn’t take anything away from the build.

I’ve got four huge whisky barrels here that I don’t know what to do with yet but I was obviously considering attempting a guitar build of some kind. It doesn’t sound like it will be much fun though. 😆

@robin maybe a bit of an arse to work with some of the nicer woods are in my experience, looks really nice though

Not sure on the bridge, being a hollow body means less to work with I'd imagine. Maybe if the recess was a particular shape or that, or maybe even just a touch larger then the edges rounded off or something? Draw attention to it rather than it being kinda hidden.

I didn't say it wasn't fun just some of the things to be aware of though. The inside of the barrels are likely to be charred black fairly deep into the wood. The lids are held together with dowels in random places that you don't see until the boards are separated. Probably also very wet and will shrink and warp as it dries. It all just adds to the challenge.

I'm a bit reluctant to take any more off it, I must be quite close to cutting through already. I might just tidy up and round edges off a little.

@robin yeh I did wonder, bit more room to play on a solid body. But, I think just rounding off the hard edges etc will look spot on.

Top Tip @Boo ...

Before you plan what to do with them, empty them first.

@robin - completely agree with the other comments about the sunken bridge - it's a "quality feature", not a mis-measurement.

I've seen it on proper branded guitars (decent, expensive brand, IIRC, I just can't remember what it was!), so absolutely no reason to even think about trying to hide it.

Looks like it's a good close fit as it is, so just round over the edges of the recess slightly and celebrate it.

(Yes, I've added a similar quality feature to builds in the past - yours looks neater.)

@nsj 🤣 Can you imagine the delivery cost?

Maybe I would give one away to the first person who can find my house and come and collect a barrel. 😜 Scotland is a big country.

Yeah there’s defo a Neeson film in that somewhere. He’ll come after you with lock, stock and barrel. That’s just how he rolls.

One can find an example on my very first build, where something moved during the glueup of the neck. 😊 I just made a rectangular recess around the bridge and nobody has really commented it.

Nobody commented on it until now.

And well done for changing the subject from Liam Neeson's starring role in Whisky Galore back to guitars.

@Boo - you've given us enough clues - I reckon we could narrow it down to a small enough area with the incentive of a barrel of whisky to collect ...
