@russ Yeah, I shelved it but decided to go with it. The neck join is not perfect. There is a very small gap about a mil. Shimmed it but still visible. Archtops with neck break angles on the body is quite tricky making the tenon neck. It is something that needs to be taught to me how I think. This is my 3rd attempt and got it close and much better than the previous ones. Overall I am happy about it and I know it will be playable.
@rocknroller912 best solution I feel would be a vacuum press for sure.
In the past and I did it only once and came out satisfactory. With more thought if I should do it again might work really well.
Damp wet towel over the veneer that is placed on top of the carve top to mold into shape with an iron and a heat gun. Ironing and heating the wet towel. Check and look occasionally during the process til you get the veneer spot on into shape.
Combination wood glue and strategic dabs of super glue.
Trick is to place super glue in areas that difficult to clamp primarilly the heavily carved areas. Press on those areas for it to instantly adhere and it will act as a clamp for the wood glue. Not enough super glue, it will air pocket. Too much wood glue it will be a pain to sand off thin veneer. A balancing act. I tried it and it worked but there were a few areas of too much super glue that cannot be sanded off completely without sanding through the veneer. Ended up putting another layer of veneer re doing the same process. The wood glue softened but the super glue held up on the first layer of veneer. Knowing what I knew, it actually worked.
Thanks this is useful, I thought that shaping the veneer before gluing would be needed and didn’t think of a heat gun.
looks like this method works
Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.
