Not progress but feels like it.

I have been making patterns and have now placed bits to give me more of an idea how it will look.

DBF36EFE 6550 41D6 9A28 03100610C1B5

The through neck bit is currently 70mm wide - the body end will need to be 100mm wide so I will add 15mm either side (poss Maple - Poss Walnut) after I have cut the profile (side view) as I can only get 85 - 90mm through my tiny bandsaw - will also need little bits adding to the headstock.

The wings are going to be a Padauk - Walnut - Padauk sandwich.

I started to mark up the neck blank and noticed that the glue joint between the Padauk and walnut had failed at one end - on closer inspection the joint between padauk and maple on both sides was looking dodgy - used a few Stanley blades as wedges and a hammer and both side separated.....

Will rethink....

Hi Bill,

Mmmm. At least it's better that this happened now rather than later! What did you glue it with?

Hi Bill,

I don't think there is anything in the choice of materials that could have caused the problem. If you PM me with your address I can send you a small pot of the UF resin and hardener that I use for laminating my backs and sides if you fancy giving that a go.

Regards

Darren

It gives you a much longer open time and so there is no danger of it starting to dry out before you get all the layers glued and under pressure, which may be what caused the initial problem.

@frocesterbill I wonder what went wrong what do you think?

Sounds like there was not enough glue?

Dodgy prep?

Maybe the glue dried too fast before you got the clamps on? White glue would give more working time which may help...

I took the original blank to bits and one of the bits of maple was warped.....

Also I think I took too long getting it all clamped up so maybe the glue had gone off before pressure was applied?

The blank had been sat waiting to be worked on for about 6 weeks - better that it went wrong before I had gone further.

I split some of the joins with Stanley blades and the rest I used bandsaw, hand plane and drum sander to recover most of the wood.

The bits nearly ready for glueing....

Bits were prepped following Mark’s feature in the Saturday Workshop Live Stream.  I glued up using the Prefere glue from Darren on Sunday morning and was left clamped until a few minutes ago - will need to clean up a bit so will run it over the planer later - looks good but a bit gluey.

The blank has been planed and then run though my drum sander - very happy with how it looks.

Hopefully will get some more progress this week.

Thanks to Darren for the glue and Mark for the guidance!

Headstock angle cut - bandsaw then router with extended base - I have a double ended version of Mark’s headstock angle jig - the ‘other’ end is to do the body break angle.

I cut the body break angle yesterday - like the headstock bandsaw then router and jig.

The wedge removed doing the headstock angle has had a quick coat of finishing oil just see what it could look like.
