Sorry to hear that @peebee! Why not try making some yourself with the bandsaw? If it doesn’t work out it’ll at least be good practice...

Practice on scrap...

TBH @peebee, unless you’re planning on repeating the fec up on future builds and therefore needing lots of veneer, you can find small offcut pieces on eBay, or I can just put some bits & pieces in the post to you?

What sort of gap (thickness) have you got?

Thanks Tv haven’t measured but I’d be surprised if it’s as much as .5mm either side.

Try taking a shaving off a bit of your body offcuts with a plane, adjust the depth of cut to get the thickness you want.

Well that’s probably because @robin is superior at problem solving. And decorating sheds.Β

Try cutting a thin bit on your bandsaw, double side tape it onto a lump of wood and use a block to sand..........

Measure once........
Measure again.........
Sod it - make tea!

@peebee

If I make a mistake like that it try and fit a solid piece of wood into the pocket instead of a veneer, because glued on veneers don’t route or carve very easily. It’s liable to tear because there will be air pockets somewhere. Do you need to adjust the template sizes. With solid wood you can route again.

Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.

@peebee Glue some veneer to each side of your neck. When the glue has dried, use some 80 grit sandpaper on a hard, flat block to sand them down until the neck fits tight in the pocket. Make sure you sand each side the same amount, so maybe 10 times each side and check they are kept at 90 degrees to the bottom of then neck heal (use a square to regularly check it). Check the fit and the alignment constantly also. It’s a lot of backwards and forwards but it will go in eventually. 👍

@darrenking

I'm going to be needing some of your funky looking ply soon.

Do you do 6mm sheets for applied tops?

@rocknroller. Thanks for the reply, the template for the pocket is tapered and long so should fit somewhere along it’s length. I positioned and repositioned to make sure it was right.....but still the pocket is slightly too wide.......don’t know if I used a wrong reference line somewhere, haven’t been back in the garage since to check yet. I think as the gap is small I will just go for veneers this time, if it was larger then I would give your method a go.

@boo, I think this is what I’ll try as the gap is small and when I fit the neck on centre there is a gap both sides! Annoying but I suppose it was going to happen at some point!

I am going to get some more scrap and practice until I get a method that works and is repeatable.

@peebee It happens. I tend to put a layer or 2 of masking tape around the edges if the neck pocket template where the router bit bearing will ride. It makes for a super tight neck pocket. Sometimes too tight but better than it being loose. I have done both plugging it and re routing and veneers as well. Both work. No worries, your neck will be glued into place in no time.

@darrenking Next time you are sending something my way, if you could put me a few bits of spare veneer off cuts, I would be very grateful. Thank you. 👍
