It's worth a few minutes of your life just watching the video on that page, I had no idea it was such a manual process or that there were so many stages.

@markbailey

Thanks for posting the link. You’ve certainly cleared a path through the mine field of sourcing supplies for all us amateurs. It makes life a lot easier.

@markbailey thanks for that, do you know of any non-spray finishes that work well over them?
Given the economy of scale clearly A3 is best “value” which also means I’ll have to make many many guitars 🙂

But it did only take 2minutes ...

For anyone who’s contemplating using these people they happily sent me some samples to use to test out finishes on. The samples went on really well too! I’ve a couple of other avenues to try with this after having nothing but failure with homemade water slide decals before I end up having to commit to footing the bill for a sheet of these!!!

Has anyone had success with DIY transfers, pricing up an A4 2 colour transfer sheet from approved is coming in at just under 100 which I just cant justify the price of?

…turns out I calculated the price wrong, A5 sheet in two colours was quoted to me at just under 170, now I really can’t justify that. Think I’ll just buy a pen and learn to write neatly 🤔

@tej

Ive thought about doing things a different way, like doing a two wood headstock say rosewood and ebony instead of a plain one colour. Tried it once it worked ok.

It is a bit much for a one off.

People seem to have quite a bit of success with DIY transfers on YouTube.

I also wonder about screenprinting something.

But I've just remembered that there is a little CNC sitting in our hackspace which I don't think has been fired up since it was brought in because noone's had a use for it.. but now I'm wondering if it would work for inlays. I have some very pretty gold coloured mother of pearl offcuts.

I'll have to look into it.

I’ll have a look, maybe there are different brands I could try. Home crafted dry rub didn’t work well as it’s ultimately a big sticker. In the past, water slide ones have reacted badly with the finish coats.

@jonhodgson inlaying would be nice but don’t have the equipment to do that well by hand or access to a cnc. I’ve been looking at screen printing though and it seems you can get stuff to make the masks that is photo sensitive so I would still be able to print the design on the computer and let chemistry do the rest. I’ll post about it off that seems viable.

Other suggestion I had was a template and spray paint but the problem here is making the template accurate when you have to cut it with a craft knife just isn’t realistic for some of the design I want.

@rocknroller the headstock I’ve made is with two woods, neck is mahogany and the headstock is laminated both sides with rosewood. Or did you mean something else?

@Tej, I thought about laser cutting a template for paint, but the problem with that is you need a design with no holes in it, but it might be a good solution if your design works in that respect.

I'm looking at hot transfer paper. You have to print it with a laser printer, but we have one at the hackspace. You're also supposed to use a heat press, but some people seem to do ok with a normal iron and I've looked and I think I could make a small headstock sized heatpress quite affordably (might be overkill for a single guitar, but maybe I can think of other projects to use it for)
