I like LP Jrs.

I like the simplicity of a single slab of wood, no fancy top, a single pickup, plug-in-and-play.

I also like that they tend to be (in my experience) pretty light, and easy to strap on and play.

Β

What I don't like is fact that they need an ugly piece of black plastic scratchplate on them, to cover the neck join that would otherwise be exposed and visible.Β Β

An exposed and visible neck join is probably worse than the ugly black plastic scratchplate.Β  Just.

(To be fair, I don't like ugly pieces of black plastic anywhere on my guitars).

Β

So, how to resolve the like of LP Jrs with the dislike of black plastic?

Take one LP Jr ...

20200823 115713

Β

(Yes, I know it should really have a dog ear P90, and also that the rubber surround of the mini HB isn't looking too good, but that's another story for another day)

Β

... one LP Jr, nicely stained red (it's got gold grain filler underneath the red, which really catches the light), but with the exposed and visible neck join spoiling the view

Β

I'm pretty chuffed with the way this one turned out.Β  No ugly black plastic scratchplate, AND no visible neck join!

The body is stained red over gold grain filler - the gold catches the light nicely, but it's not as in your face as I thought it might have been.Β  Quite subtle.

@tv1010101 Very nice and a job well done sir!Β

@markbailey Could you not route the neck pocket, glue the neck in and then laminate a top on to cover the neck joint? One could use the neck pocket routing template to cut the top before laminating.Β

@johnnierox-boo

I did something similar (though for a completely different reason) on another build ...

20150307 152458
20150307 152537

... though, because of the fundamental problem that I was fixing on that one, I could use a nice thick cap.Β  With LPJs, I guess you could veneer the top, or use a much thinner cap, to hide the join.

But I photoshopped a scratchplate instead - it was a lot easier!!

@tv1010101 Yeah, that is the very idea my good man! I’ve got a build coming up that requires something like this, he only wants a bridge pickup and doesn’t want a scratch plate. If I use a thin (8mm) top, I think I can achieve it.Β
