Iv’e watched the designing and building an electric guitar clean through. I’m gathering things and building jigs for a bit. I did source some nice mahogany.
—been wood working for a fair bit, and playing music for a lifetime... I really do love them both, so here I am. I’ve built kits for others, but never a scratch build.
—I was trying to put together all the information needed to build, by copying and pasting whenever I found a nugget of knowledge. It was tedious and to be honest, not very successful. I was struggling.
—Then I saw this gentlemen (Mark) on a live feed for a one piece neck build. He was comfortable. He looked in the camera (my eyes) when he spoke. His manner made me feel as if I was in the same room. The feed was riddled with technical issues, but I got what I needed when I heard, ‘you can see my videos edited for consumption on my website’.
—So, I came and started the design course, then the build course. You must see his time elapsed build video, it’s roughly 23 minutes of the entire build. I was hooked after that. I now had a feel for the scope of the work.
—plus, after watching the build course I’m aware of the potential pitfalls. So I’m committed and diving in my new friends. Yesterday I went to the shop and spent zero money on my neck angle jig. I hate making jigs, they typically are soooo over engineered. So I rarely build them any longer. Mark’s jigs are my kinda jig, suitable for any caveman to use. I say this with nothing but admiration.
keep it simple and you will actually learn something. Complicate it if you want keep scratching your head.....
Welcome to the group, you'll find a lot of very helpful new friends here. Marks videos and online courses are great, I stumbled on them by pure chance and I was hooked, until then I didn't know that I wanted to build a guitar, now I'm on my second build. Post photos of your build as you progress and let us see what you're doing.

Mark is a *great* teacher, and a *great* guitar builder. He’s also a great guy to spend time with (virtually or in the workshop!).

I can see Split from my Terrace, so yes we are close. It's one of my fava as well. I played the First Blues festival a while back. The stage looks towards Brac, surrounded by 3rd century Architecture. It was incredible.
Speaking of jigs, Iv'e noticed the hinge on my neck angle jig has loose bearings so that the end of the plank can move side to side. Is it critical that the plank stays centered perfectly at all times? I can mod the jig or buy a hinge, just wondering if its critical.....

I’d say change the hinge or find a way to hold things steady. I don’t think it’s necessary that the neck is perfectly on center but as you’ll be using a router you definitely don’t want things sliding around.

@bangy Oh and no, it’s not absolutely critical that it’s bang on a centre line, it’s just a guide really.

shouldn’t matter too much about the hinge because the front of the headstock will be stuck to the bottom board of the jig with double sided tape and a clamp will be applied to the back of the neck.
