Hello all, I wonder if anyone could answer this question please.

Is it possible to use a Floyd Rose trem on a shorter scale electric guitar such as a 25” or 24.75”?

I used to play with a guitar with a Floyd for years and years but then got bored and used anything but. I now like playing shorter scale guitars but fancy having a Floyd in it. They are normally used in 25.5” scale guitars but maybe they can be used in various other scale lengths too. Having said that, I’m now wondering if they can be used in longer scale lengths too? The intonation will obviously be different for each scale length so that will determine where the bridge will be installed. Will there be enough adjustment on the trem?

I would be grateful for any info.

Thanks.

Boo.

Hi @boo,

I've not built one myself, but there's certainly PRS guitars factory made with FR bridges at 25" scale. I don't know if Gibson factory make them, but certainly seen LPs etc fitted with FR. I've also seen baritone guitars with 'em.

The may be a specific FR model for baritones for intonation adjustment, but the standard FR has pretty good travel in the saddles for intonation, so should be fine if placed in the right place on 'normal' scale lengths.

I learnt to play on a fixed bridge and my right hand rests on the bridge as I play, so I don't really get on with most trems. They can be a pig to set up, but a good floating bridge is a really good system.

Cheers

Dan

@boo my ggbo build, the black limba neck through with binding etc. That's a 24.75 scale with floyd, works perfect. A lot of companies have been doing it for years.

Post hole centres sit a 1/2 inch forward of scale length no matter what scale you use. Just remember that part and you'll be golden.

@nsj That is perfect, exactly the info I was looking for. I was just going to try it anyway using a rough and ready quick build and see how things went. I’ll go for it now then.

Cheers Neil 👍

@boo Welcome. Usually with gibson scale I measure 630mm for scale line which is slightly longer, seems to work great.
