Folks,

I need to make another set of clamps. The first ones I made worked OK for a while but began to split. I only had a mahogany style of wood knocking around at the time.

What kind of easily available wood should I try and source?

I bought a length of steel bar from B&Q for most of them, ran out and used a bar of Ali. I know I paid  through the nose going to a DIY store. Because the forces involved are that high you can use hardwood apparently.

Please let me know if you find a neat way of making them.

The originals are made from Hornbeam

I use maple - offcuts from neck blanks

I still have the first two I made about 20 (OMG) years ago still going strong!

Since then I've made about 12 but nowadays I buy them as it takes so long - here is my tactic for getting cheap cam clamps - Wait until they are on special offer!

Measure twice, cut once...
