I've had this Yamaki guitar since 1971. Recently my toddling grandson knocked it over and the head snapped off. I believe I've fixed this OK - still needs some tidying though.

Whilst I have the strings off I thought I'd try a re-fret. As you can see the frets are low and badly worn. Also the fingerboard has craters in it.

Notice it has a zero fret. What to do?

  • Should I keep the zero fret and simply level the frets below it or
  • Replace the zero fret with a nut or
  • somethings else?

Any advice warmly welcomed...

Interesting bridge too...

actually running a straight edge along the frets I find the zero fret is no higher than the others - how did that ever work - it did though...

Hey Herb -

Standard practice if going for a refret would be to also replace the zero fret with a slightly higher fret.

You could use the same fret wire but just level from the first fret onwards.

Measure twice, cut once...

As long as the 'Zero Fret' is not lower than the first fret it will be OK.

Measure twice, cut once...

Interesting project there Herb. I have a similar acoustic that my friend picked up at an auction and it doesn’t even have a truss rod. I’ll dig it out of the attic I think.Β
