Am I the only one expecting to see persons in various states of dress, and undress, running around the workshop in the background?

(It's the soundtrack that did it - my wife said exactly the same when she heard it!!)

No @tv101, you’re not. We didn’t get a lot of British tv as kids but we sure did watch a lot of Benny Hill on TV50 Detroit. That music always reminds me of that old  guy crunching his nuts on a fence or whatever, crazy times!

Practice on scrap...

Hey Steve, the slight pause after you had drilled four holes in the headstock momentarily made me think you were building a banjo!! Thankfully you quickly redeemed yourself with the last two and so you can remain a forum member without having to appear in front of the disciplinary committee!😂

BTW, if anyone does want advice on banjo building (especially jazz banjos) I believe that TV10101 has a ‘special’ interest in these fascinating instruments!🤣🤣 🤣

Being serious - just for a minute - there's a not-so-well-known trick that all professional banjo makers use to guarantee the quality, playability and musicality of their instruments.  If only more of them adopted it, then perhaps banjos wouldn't have such a bad reputation @darrenking!

It's similar to the "tap test" that Mark (and Steve, with perhaps slightly less success) has demonstrated in selecting suitable wood for the acoustic build.

During the build process, as soon as you've selected the wood to be used (and this next bit might sound mad, but stay with it), you need to "temp test" it.  The best way is to carefully and safely construct a suitably warm environment, at a suitable distance from any sources of moisture.  Then, gradually introduce the wood to the warm environment (PPE might be advisable) and watch for any reaction.

Before you assume that this is tv101 having a joke, there is a proven historical precedent for this sort of test, which has been used globally for centuries (you can look it up on Google - less so on YT - called the "non-drowning witch test", or "drowning not-a-witch test").

When carefully chucked onto the bonfire introduced to the warm environment, if the wood bursts into flames, then it's suitable for banjo building.  If it doesn't, then that's a pretty good indicator of it not being wood, and not being suitable for banjo building.  Don't use it!

This has been a public information advisory, prepared on behalf of music audiences worldwide.

Glad it's not just me then @mattbeels.

Knowing how @steveadams responds to viewer feedback and strives to produce content that meets their expectations, I'm now even-more-eagerly looking forward to PART 6 of his acoustic build videolog.

😆

@steveadams

I've just watched part V.  I'm well impressed with the way that you  casually drilled the tuner holes with a handheld drill. When I tried that, I had to plug most of them and then try again more carefully to get them straight. Have you tried the tuners in the holes yet ?

@steveadams

After his pre-unboxing video windup I say it's the least he deserves.

Confession time - I clicked the like button before I even pressed play because I knew I was going to like it. Settled down with a can of Guinness and my favourite snack oatcakes and white Stilton. I wasn’t disappointed, better than anything on tv and it lasted a whole can.

Banjo building, well I costed a build and found that’s it’s cheaper to buy one from a Ireland than source the metal parts from Stew Mac and build the rest myself. It’s all in the brass tone ring.

Some people call me a tool, others are less complimentary. Tools being useful things.
